Hey,

My name is Rob and i'm from Australia but right now I am sitting in a hostel in Poland. My buddy and I are heading to USA in October after a 2 month stint in europe and really would like to drive from my uncles place in Austin to my buddies place in San Fran via Las Vegas ect (miss SILV by 2 weeks :().

Problem: I am under 25 and a student lol thus looking for the most cost effective way!

Possible solutions:
1. Buy a car eg corolla or something and leave it with my mate in San Fran to resell for us.

2. Rent a car.

3. Get beheaded on a greyhound:thumbsdow!

Easiest option would be to rent a car but as I am under 25 and dropping it off in another state it seems a little pricy, like $1000 more than I was expecting.
I have heard of companies who need cars dropped from one state to the next but cant remember much else about them.
Maybe some one has an idea.

Thanks

Rob

I remember a Top Gear Ep. that went to florida and did that.. Haha.. They bought a car and drove it to somewhere then sold it when they got there.

I would say try and buy a 4cyl. Toyota something, good on gas. then sell it when you get there. Just do a good job checking out the car. As long as you can do some repairs just to be safe then go for it. sounds like a fun trip. Bring tools.. :)

Atm I have found a website called orbitz, essentially it is a 3rd party company that finds rates for different hire cars from many differnt rental places. For some reason it gives better prices than going direct through budget or avis.

Austin - Albiqureque - Grand Canyon - Las Vegas - San Fran. 2000miles in 4 days sounds like fun! Buying will just be too much of a head ache and a worry.

Oh looks like a Chevy Aveo, don't worry Ian i'll still sport a pimp hat with a feather.

Have fun. And San Francisco is going to scare the shit out of you.

Why is this so?

Also if it were like the top gear episode and we wrote "country and western is crap" or "man love is great OK!" I think we would get well received in san fran but leaving austin well i dont think that would go down well.

You probably wouldn't make it out of Austin.............unless escorted by a band of "good ol boys".......:biglaugh:

Good luck with your journey.

Well for one. San Francisco is the city of madness. You will HAVE to drive defensive. Its very crammed there, there are insane steep hills, and blind dropoffs. There are no speedlimits, you drive as fast as the conditions allow. Its suuuper crowded as well. Tons of one lane roads.

But its so much fun. I lived with a friend there for a while. The MR2 is a perfect car around SF, as long as your good with that manual trans.

I guess fortunatly we'll just be dropping the car off once we get there or maybe a day after. Dont know what condition it will be in after we pretend to be steve McQueen in the "Bullet".

Yeah I forgot about the steep ass hills, I dunno I have been in some fucked up places, taxi drivers in Bankok and Cambodia seem to not have a care for their life...........it was fun though!

In Rob's case that's debatable ;)

Compared to that kind of driving, all American cities will look sane.

Compared to Europe, the roads here are huge and well ordered, even in the cities.

You NEVER see things like 5 cars wide on a 4 lane road like you do in Belgium or some other places in Europe.

You try that shit in a US city and the police will have you for lunch.

And we don't have roundabouts for the most part. I think there are maybe 3 or 4 in the whole country.

Compared to the stuff you are used to, nothing here will bother you.

I find it really odd you guys dont have round abouts they are all over aus. In france I visited the largest of them all, 5 lanes of unmarked round about goodness at the arc d triumph.
I doubt you could even fit 3 cars let alone 4 on a 4 lane road in the US; Hummer, SUV, Hummer.................;).

So I guess all I have to worry about is steep ass roads in San Fran with accompying blind drop offs, cops in texas and my gear shifting abilities. Sounds fair enough.
