Sounds like an intermittent wiring problem then. You should never see code 22, as it is a major malfunction of the sensor circuit. You will not get a code 22 from overheating.

Would just getting a new wiring harness fix my problems? I plan on making the engine look pretty after it runs pretty, and if getting a wiring harness could just solve the problem and make it look better at the same time, I might just have to go with that.

A new harness is a good idea on many of these cars as the 20yrs exposure to underhood heat makes the wire insulation and connectors very brittle. Plus, the harness clamps fall apart as well, especially the ones attached to the engine itself, which can lead to chaffing and intermittent short circuits.

Some year/model harnesses are no longer available though from Toyota.

Are you having other intermittent electrical issues besides the code 22? The first connectors to go are usually on the exhaust side (CPS, temp sensors, O2 sens)

No. the 22 is the only code.
Like you said, it is a 20 yr old car that's seen 250,000+ miles (all but about 50k on this engine).

But right now the damn thing overheated again and now it wont start. I most likely have a far bigger leak than first expected. I filled the radiator with coolant and water properly last night and this afternoon it heated up on me. Thermostat looks good. I don't know. I'll get this worked out tomorrow...

Well. I went to get it and I have a code 11 and the car won't start.

I think this means it's time to pick up a for sale sign.

Where in TN are you at? If you're close enough, I might could help with it some. It kinda sounds like you're pulling water into one or more cylinders, either from a bhg or cracked head/block (less likely than a bhg). Mine did this last time the headgasket blew, sucked all the water out of the system in a few miles. Steam cleaned cylinder #6 real well though ;).

Chattanooga. PM me for more details.

I'm pretty sure it's not a BHG as of right now, because between the time when the car starts and the car overheats, it runs pretty damn strong even though the turbo is bad. The smoke is white though. There's nothing blue about the smoke.

Johnathan is right. Don't sell the car. Be a true Supra OWNER, and fix it when it's broke. We've all done it.

I had BHG in my car that looks a lot like Johnathan's. I drove it, and even raced it with BHG. It still ran really strong, but I had to add water after driving the car hard. This went on for 6 months, until I had it pressure checked to confirm my BHG. The mechanic would not believe me that it was blown, even after the pressure test. But 2 days later, it went all the way out. I could pour water into the radiator, and watch it pour back out of the tail pipe.

This isn't the first time I've gotten pissed at it and decided to sell it. I wont part with the damn thing. It's so fun to drive. I just get frustrated when all this shit goes wrong. I'm new to turbos. Its my first import, lot of new things here and I don't completely understand most of it. I've put many hours behind a computer monitor reading up about various things. I'm pretty sure I get the hang of turbos now, but I still would like to be able to diagnose my own problems.

I've been through hell with my car and it's problems, and I'm sure most of the other members here have been with their cars too...Supra's are NOT forgiving...

Just take your time to research everything before you jump headfirst into a repair...and if you have any problems, you can always get on SM and ask for help.

This forum is all about helping each other and learning from others...experience TAKES TIME.

Yeah, I know. I just get really frustrated when I can't fix something (ESPECIALLY if I caused the problem, which I have the last couple times it died).

My motto, like many others, with the supra has been "If it breaks, upgrade it." It's been a costly way to go, but like you I just can't bring myself to selling it. My knowledge of cars has grown quite a bit since my first BHG thanks to toyota. Once she's running and you're out tearing up the streets/track again with a big grin it's all worth it!

The supra is a drug...you're just having withdrawals. :crazy1:
