The stock lug nuts on the 90's cars fill in the gap between the stud and the actual wheel. Aftermarket ones wouldnt work right on the 90+ wheels unless they were the exact same style.
The stocks are short shank lugs, but they have an acorn tip for holding on the steel spares. Aftermarket short shanks ought to work fine, though I haven't used them myself.
