right now my 88 n/a has a w58 trans. I was wondering if the r154 was a better trans, and what all is involved in the swap?

it is just able to handle more power. the gearing is relatively the same, keep the W58 'till it breaks or you go turbo.
handles more power, but doesn't shift as smoothly...
unless you're gonna swap to a turbo, there's no reason to swap the tranny (unless you get a great deal and your current w58 is total shit...even then......)

I'm currently running an auto slush box in an 89 na car as well. I want to go 5 speed, but don't know which trans to go with? I figure someone's done it, so I'd ask for opinions before buyin a 5speed tranny. I'm hoping to eventually push 350 to 400 horse to the rear wheels on both cars. thanks for the link It was real informative.drjonez said:

why do you have to change your speedo cable? same cable....different lengths. auto cable will work just fine.
shifting on the R154 isn't as smooth... but it's more positive feeling IMHO and I like it...

No. I believe people usually say the W58 is only good for about 300whp. Might as well go with the R154 in that case.88mkiisupra said:
how long the W58 lasts is purely a function of how the previous owner treated it, what oil you run and how you treat it. hard launches will end its life quickly.
