In Need Of Shims !!!

I just measured my Valve clearances and they were all messed up all greater then .018" So I've spent the last little bit taking it all apart to replace the shims. I have two spare heads that I've pulled the buckets/shims out of but still came up short in what I need. I've seen many threads with people saying they have boxes of shims. Wondering if anyone can help me out here.

This is what I Need all measurements in inches:
4 at .121 ( really only two I have two that will fit here)
2 at .122
2 at .123
1 at .124
2 at .126
1 at . 127

This is what I have:
5 at .120
6 at .119
2 at .121 ( so would use these two for the .121's I need)
Then a whole shit load around the .113ish mark give or take.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Check with your local machine shop. I'm sure that if they don't have them in stock, they can get what you need.

first off you have something going on here. The largest shim is .120in or 3mm you have the wrong measurements or that cam is really worn down

I just checked my spare set and only had one (.12) it's a .1211 and I had bought it from Toyota back when I shimmed my head. Despite extras that I had then, I end up buying like 13 or something iirc. Reason was that I needed numbers like you need (bigger). I guess I could send it to you anyway hah. PM you're address.

its very possible the cam is worn down... however why do you say the largest shim is .120? he has in his hands shims that are bigger then that and shims can be bought bigger then that as well...

just curious?

yeah we wouldnt double them...we would get some aftermarket ones that are the correct size.... but you bring up a good point.. it might be easier to get another use camshaft (especially since we have a few other pairs lying around) and clearance that out with the shims we have and that would prob work better.

I can post up all my Numbers if someone wants to recheck my math. But I did it a few times to make sure i was getting the same thing....I have another stock set of cams here I could swap in and check if the clearances are the same.

Side Note. I'm not sure why you say the largest stock shim is .120

PER TSRM
Shims are available in 17different sizes in increments of : .050mm(.0020in) from 2.50mm(.0984in) to 3.30mm(.1299 in)

make sure to torque caps to 14lbs, also swap the cam, make sure you put the caps in proper order and also snug the caps little by little don't snap the cam then post your numbers.

I've also found that for some reason... sometimes the buckets vary in thickness very slightly. this may help you some if you swap a few buckets.

Success! I didnt pay more than 5 bucks a shim :icon_bigg

nice! thanks!

on a sidenote...the cam that was in there was TORCHED...

TSRM Specs:

Standard: 1.5098in
MINIMUM: 1.4961in

THIS CAM:
1.490
1.491
1.467
1.470
1.465
1.478
1.488
1.488
1.491
1.490
1.487
1.480

Yeah that thing is FUCKED.

The spare cam he had laying around:

1.506
1.506
1.509
1.509
1.505
1.506
1.507
1.507
1.504
1.508
1.507

MUCH BETTER...So that one is gonna get put in and clearances measured again... should be MUCH better and shims should be more managable to get if many are needed at all anymore.

Ok just swapped out the cam and re-measured
the results are :
.008+
.008+
.008+
.010+
.008+
.010
.010+
.010
.010+
.010+
.010+
.010+

The + is the feeler gauge IMO went in to easy but the next size up didn't fit.
So Spec is .008 - .012 which means it is basically perfect now and didn't need any shims.
Thanks for all the help......lets now hope this fixed the valve tick i was hearing.
