Most 600ci motors make 800hp without boost....easily. But lets not sidetrack the thread.

Well see, I think maybe I'm reading you wrong Doward, because most people are telling me much bigger, and all these people know i'm not in it for the lumpity lump. And no, I'm not doubting you, I think I'm just stupid.

Its a small block 400, its all stock right now, but when this all goes down it will have an Edelbrock 600-650. I believe the flow rate on a 400 is like 59* CFM so itll suit.

The extra cubes of the 400 will make it more tame than say if it was in a 327 or 350, but the problem still persists of compression and headflow. My guess is the compression is around 8.5:1, which obviously isn't helping the cause....

You can always upgrade the cam later when theres more mods.(heads, converter, gears) Its not like its expensive or anything :) I can just about guarantee that boat will be happier with Dowards suggestion :icon_bigg

Gotcha. Were talking about duration at .050 correct?

I'll probably just throw an RV cam in there and call it a day. I'm budgeting myself $500 dollars for all this crap.

100-200 for a 4 Barrel 600-650
200ish for a Cam
and the rest for a water pump, timing chain and gaskets and such.

Should be a fun week project.

What the hell is an 'RV' cam?

Find something around 214/224 @ .050" lift, around .480" lift (on 1.5 rockers) and put a set of 1.6 roller rockers on it.

I dunno, i'd probably leave out the 1.6's...might put him close to coil bind....

Here's my cam suggestion... Lunati Voodoo series 213*/219* @.050 .454/.468
$189.95 in Summit for cam and lifters. Don't forget to check the pushrod length and make sure the rocker is contacting the center 1/3 of the valve.

As for the carb, i assume its got a quadrajet on it now?

Stock manifold from a 1966 327 chevelle. My friend is giving it to me from his mom's car.

At first this was just going to be swapping a new carb, but I figured that, I wanted a new cam sometime, so might as well do it while the manifold is off. And the engine is running 195k miles, with the original timing chain, might as well do it all in one fell swoop.

Like I said, this isn't a high performance build, its just a little extra umph. And since I was most deffinately reading cam angles wrong, This is very insightful.

Same thing is happening with my truck, I wanted to upgrade the motor a bit and get it rebuilt, then realized I can get a 545 kit for pretty cheap, so why not? :icon_mad:

I'm gonna get a Edelbrock AFB for the Cadillac, but for the Impala I'm getting a 600 or a 650 for the Impala. I was debating if I really wanted to do a cam yesterday as I looked at my finances. But when it comes down to it. I can just look at it like a $220 timing chain job ;)

Edelbrock carbs are easier to change jets on in my experience...

What about headers and exhaust? Gotta be the whole package...

I dont care about gas mileage. Theres more to life than gas mileage, but its around 12 in the town and 16ish on the freeway I would assume.

Poodles, I'm going to do an exhast, but I'm still looking for something pretty quiet. I'm pretty sure i'm gonna do a 2 1/4 inch borla system. Headers COULD come later.

I would do headers first and work towards the back

Headers on those engine are CHEAP and the stock ones are all sorts of shitty...

Go with a flowmaster or magnaflow exhaust as IMHO they sound the best on V8's.

But seriously, this is like getting a huge turbo, intake, cams, catback but still using the stock downpipe on a Supra, it's a MASSIVE bottleneck...

Its also a massive factor in inducing loud.

Most people miss completely on the pint of why I want to do this. Turn it into an EVEN better daily driver, not a 13 second car.

I originally wanted a 4 barrel carb because as most know, a well tuned 4 barrel can get much better mileage and even better performance than any 2 barrel.

I thought about the cam for 2 reasons, This engine is almost at 200k miles on the original timing chain, First off, That needs to be changed, and I figured I could snag myself an RV cam or something different to toss in there while the front end was disassembled.

The exhaust was something I planned on doing since its a bitch to work ont he car with a single exhaust haha, thats the only thing.

And I may be the odd man out, but I generally don't care for super loud, and this car isn't gonna be loud.
