Hey guys, one of my really good friends currently drives a mildly modified Subaru WRX wagon and he is seriously interested in selling off to pick up a 1jz SC300. I don't know too much about 1jz motors so maybe you guys can help out and give an honest opinion of this car and its engine setup :)

the only reason Id keep that subie around if to drive up a snow covered mountian to go snowboarding. Judging by your location thats not an issue. Sick SC do it!

A lot of work went into the SC. Why would one walk away from that beautiful creation???
How does one in possession of a 1jz deal with smog in cali?

How many miles on the 1JZ with the Unorthodox crank pulley? Remove that as soon as possible.

That would be a engine saver. I replaced them on every car I get cause I lost my first 7m to a stock one that didn't do its job.

Hey guys thanks for the input.

Whats wrong with the pulley?

The car is being sold because the owner outgrew modding cars and moved on to a 3rd gen GS. The car has been parked at the shop for the past year

Parked that long? You don't park a good running car, you drive it...

The unorthodox pulley is a solid piece, it needs to be a dampener like factory to absorb the harmonics from the crank or it will do bearing damage.

The owner wants $12,000 for it.

The car gets driven around to meets and such so it does get fired up and such. Owner lives in Orange County in a townhouse and the car is stored at the shop in Irwindale so its pretty far.

I rode in the car and it felt pretty good and sounds pretty mean. The only issue is that the speedometer doesn't work. I guess they never figured out how to make the speed sensors work but that probably should not be an issue for any 1jz / r154 guru

My friend's concerns want to squeeze out 400+ hp from this setup after a tune and getting a boost controller. Can reliability still be maintained?

The car can be maintained if you remove the crank pulley. Other than that major destructive issue for the motor, there doesn't seem to be any other issues from SM.
