Gear oil for W58?

I've seen several threads for the R154 and the proper gear oil, and from what I gather it'd be best to use Redline MT90 gear oil. However, haven't come across any posts asking if this is also the proper oil to use in the W58 gearbox.

In the past six months, I've noticed my trans is getting a little harder to get into second and third and would like to change the gear oil, so I figured while i was putting GC in the engine, I might as well take care of the trans too.

I read your corrected post about Valvoline's gear oil changing viscosities and makeups, and didnt know if there were any recent updates.

I also can't find the Redline oil locally, what would be the best substitution readily available from Advance, AutoZone or NAPA? (I realize you don't keep a running stock of gear oils in the Salem, VA parts stores but what would I likely find that would do the trick?)

Thanks!

The gear oil used for the W58 and R154 are identical.
Here are the updates I know of:

Ford 75W-90
Pennzoil Synthetic 75W-90 GL4
Pennzoil Gearplus 80W-90 GL4
Amsoil MTG 75W-90

I looked at the Red Line site, it shows these dealers near your zip code:
Might be worth a call to get the MT-90

Car Force
3355 N. Franklin Street
Christiansburg, NC 24073
(540)382-1133

DRP Products
Rocky Mount, VA 24151
(540) 483-4442

Or, you could always mail order from Summit Racing (worth it IMO)...you'll need 3 quarts.

I use the Amsoil MTG 75W-90 in my w58 for the last 4+ years for 50,000km in my mk2. Shifts like butter!

...and it didn't before the fluid change.

thanks for the info, got off the phone with Car Force (they're right down the road here in VA). whole case at 8.99/qt. thanks again :)

im also thinking of changing the oil in my 4.30 LSD since im not sure its ever been changed. could i use the mt90 for that too, and iirc it doesn;t take very much. anyone remember how much it takes/how hard it is?

The LSD is the opposite...it needs the friction modifiers the tranny does not. I would not use MT-90 in a LSD...you want to use Red Line 75W-90 that contains these modifiers. Another option is the above Ford 75W-90 and buy the Ford friction modifier...that is uaually better on a high mileage LSD. It takes 1.7 quarts iirc....just make sure you remove the fill plug 1st, then the drain plug ;)

190k on the clock tells me to go with the ford. are there any tables to add amounts of friction modifier/how will i know when i've got the proper mix?

I would start off with about 1/2 oz and go from there. If you get clatter, add a little more till it goes away.
