Figured there might be a few new people interested in this after I got a request on my YouTube channel. I remember there were a few good write-ups years back, but there seem to be missing pics or hard to find links now.
This tends to be near the top of "Best Cheap Mods". I did mine back in 2007 using the common, cheap method previously documented and it's held up great for the last 8 years. I found a ground lead pulled out for the rear defroster in mine which shows the downside of using simple wire nuts. Never-the-less, the video shows what wires you need to get to and why you need to bypass the factory wiring if you want the fogs on without headlights.
Note: Some states have weird laws regarding fogs being on without headlights, but I think it's a pretty solid safety improvement if you use them as daytime running lights. Mine have been on for most the last 50,000 miles I've driven in my mk3 without issue.
I think the pre 89 has some slight variations, but it should be very similar.
