Flywheel and Clutch cover "matchmarks"

The TSRM says to put matchmarks on the flywheel and clutch cover when removing the tranny... I really have no clue as to the workings of the clutch, but why is this necessary?

There is no need to, as the pressure plate/ clutch cover only fits on the flywheel one way. Putting matchmarks removes confusion, though.

I think it has to do with the fact that you could (if you needed/wanted to for some reason) put the PP back on exactly the way it came off to eleviate variables in problem solving. And also possibly to reduce vibration creted by them not being lines up like they were factory?

Yeah, that makes sense mkIIIman, now that I have a better idea of how it all works down there, that sounds about right.
