Coolant temp sensor question

I just bought a 91 mkIII turbo last week and I am relatively new to supras. I have a noob question. I am wondering if the coolant temp sensor that is on the thermostat housing that looks to be vacuum controlled, can be converted to a standard electric temp sensor and also what that particular sensor connects to? Does it connect to the gauge or is it for the ECU? I dont have a Haynes manual for the car quite yet, so I am not sure about this sensor.
