Converting pre-'91 door panels to '91 speaker grills?

Has any one tried this?

I have a 87 black w/ grey interior. I am buying a 91 parts car with the red cloth interior. It looks from my searching photos of both door panels that it might be possible to remove the metal bracket, that the speaker grill snaps into, from the back of the 91 door panel. Then if I remove the metal bracket from the back of the 87 door panel and cut out the door panel to match the opening in the 91 bracket, I should be able to glue the 91 bracket to the 87 door panel and use the 91 speaker grill.

Then when I use the 91 speaker pods in the doors, the speakers will not be as shrouded by the 87 speaker grill mount.

Looking for any input as to feasibility of this mod.

Should be just as easy as you stated. Make sure you measure everything correctly and rivet the new metal grill bracket into the old panel. Personally, I would sparingly cut out the old bracket from then panel; then rivet on the new bracket. From there, cut out all excess material inside the new bracket.
