I am looking to buy a MKIII for $3,000. It has a minor knock, now, and it sounds like just a bearing in the wrong spot. I think I'll be able to get him down to $2,700. So my two questions are how easy would it to change the main bearings and is it worth the buy? The car is completely stock, turbo is in good condition, no error codes, 160,000 miles, body is next to mint, the horrible red interior, R154 tranny, and there seems to be no other problems. Lemme know what ya'll think...

If you are in Indiana, CHECK FOR RUST! Get under the car and check the subframe mount areas. Check the spare tire well. Check the bottoms of the fenders and around the wheelwells. Check for cheap bondo rust repair. Check the under side of the hatch. If you find any, walk away.

How much of the work can you do yourself, paying for this repair ain't cheap. Swapping a running 7M-GTE that has been checked out would probably be your most cost efficient.

You should not pay more than $1500-1750 for a car with a rod knock.
