im just curious as to anyone out there whos done some kind of diesel turbo like a cummins on a 7m and was wondering how they liked it?

i was thinking about doing it myself actually. my friend has a DSM who has a cummins on it and that thing spools soo nicely. :aigo:

Edit:
lol wow i feel like an idiot but i just realized holsets are diesels.

still the question stands. how do you guys like them?

It depends on the turbo size. It is irrelevant for the application. A huge turbo on a 2JZGTE might choke a 13 litre direct injected engine. Yeah, there are several Holset threads, and the people seem to like them. Go read.

Holset he3551cw here. all i can say is awesome for this turbo. it spools hard and fast, and pulls like a champ. my car on 8psi can stay with my bros 88 hardtop and he is on the ct26 at 15psi with exhaust, intercooler, injectors and i have the holset with exhaust, fuel, stock intercooler, 8psi. 89 targa btw. get a holset.

There are quite a few around here with holsets. I just got my hx35 installed and its looking promising. I have only had it to 10psi so far but I am pleased with the performance. Spool time is pretty good but not like the BB turbos, etc. I'm seeing 10 psi right around 3500 RPM

Just be careful what sort of diesel engine you're getting a turbo from... We've come across a couple HUGE mofos that would be fun for a rotory, but useless on a smaller piston engine. Some diesel engines (looking more at semi trucks here) use 7 blade turbos, some use 11 blade. You probably won't be able to spool a 7 blade. ;)

What powerstroke? If it's a 7.3L then you can throw it away. The turbo on the 7.3L is reverse rotation, not to mention pedestal mounted, and the oil and coolant run through that, so you'd have to make a custom adapter. Not worthwhile.

Use a Holset, they're cheap, T3 flanged, and they work.

thanks for your input guys! will most of these work on a standard Turbo ECU? im thinking about getting an AEM down the road but ill settle with a SAFC for the time being. this whole diesle turbo idea is nice especially cause they're cheap but ive seen and heard good results from them.

i have my eye set on an HX40 cheap and big from the look of it but not to big where it wouldn't spool.

im excited! i really should get to posting my build here soon but i don't have enough content to show anything yet.

damn that takes awhile. with my he351 it starts spooling not much later than a ct26 does. and it will boost to about 6psi kinda slowly(compared to a ct26) then it just sky rockets to full boost. it is awesome and throws your head back. tires will tend to spin second til redline. its awesome.

The HE351 is a great turbo...its preferred to be one of the best choices of the holsets for quick boost and reasonable power, spools like the hy35 but flows the same as the hx35 I'd look into one of those if you can source one.
