Absolute's 87' Overhaul

The story:
I bought my supra a little less than a year ago. It is a white/burgundy 87' turbo. Like most others it is in ok shape, but I can not complain for $900 CDN. It has been a trying time with this supra and I am sure I have put in more money than it's worth but it is a fun car.
Well, it WAS a fun car. A little over a month ago the old 7m started knocking and has since bit the dust.

The plan:
I bought a 7m-gte from a local guy with supposedly blown rings. I am in the process of tearing it down to be brought to the machine shop.
I have also gotten my self a nice little line O' credit from the bank to to pay for the rebuild.

I am shooting for a clean and very reliable car that I can turn up the power on once I am finished college, but we will see if I can wait that long :evil2:

I have been reading a ton of other people builds but still have many questions.

Starting with my first dilemma forged or cast internals?
I was considering going with eagle rods and probe pistons but as I live in Alberta so they have to withstand temperatures as low as -40*c (also -40*f). Will I run into any problems because of this, am I just being paranoid, or is there a cast piston that can withstand 500hp (future goal).

Any help, tips, or advice is more than welcome.

Go with the forged stuff. I might be talking out of my ass, but I don't see how temp. would negatively affect forged as opposed to cast. If anything you would have to worry about temp. affecting the cast more because of the impurities in it.

Nice looking car and definitely worth it for the money IMO. Can't wait to see more.

Meh those are pic's from when I first got it, now there is a bit of rust on the drivers fenders and door. But I can only hope it make mine as clean as your car even if it is only in primer.
You gota let me know what wheels those are!

And for the forged stuff, I was told that it will be undersized when cold and can cause piston slap. Also it can be prone to spun bearings before the engine comes up to operating temperature.

Pulled a lot of the bigger stuff off the spare motor today.
I will be calling a few machine shops on Monday to get a quote on the rebuild cost.

Pics of the motor as of an hour ago:

I come from a land down under
The only place/time I could see forged internals being an issue is if you install on the loose side of the tolerance and on cold starts for the first 5 minutes it may rattle a bit.

IF you rev it hard during this time it can crack/break the skirts of the pistons.

Solution: Build on the tight side and use piston coatings so there's no chance of galling a skirt on the warm up.

Looks like a great project. I can't wait to see this on the roads. I will definitely have to drop by sometime and take a look at the cars progress.

Thanks, only one problem though. I would love to mess around and build the motor my self but I rely on it to much to go wrong and need it back on the road as soon as I can so, most of the work is going to end up being done at the shop.
Oh well, anything to keep the car on the road right?

I was wondering if a coating would help but figured I would ask the machinist. Thanks IJ.

I'm going to build her from the inside out to make sure she stays reliable and fast.

I have a whole list of parts but will start with the ones I got. The rest should be here tomorrow (would have been today if I got to UPS in time)

only got 2 things to share.
The flywheel-

your typical Fidanza

The Pistons!!-
p1126943_2.jpg

p1126943_3.jpg
These are JE Pistons .020" over made for Titan Motorsports!!
I was so excited when I got these I was literally shaking.

Didn't pay any fees shipping these across the border and the fees on the stuff I am picking up tomorrow is nothing in compared to what I thought it would be. I have Aaron from Driftmotion to thank for that. Like every one says he is great to deal with and works with his customers.

I cant wait to get her running again. so close yet so so far.

Oh and because I can here is a pic of our new dog Milo

Only got one of the two boxes the other was still on the UPS truck that was somewhere around town..
Not the most thrilling, fairly basic actually.

Oil pump-
p1127786_1.jpg

Going to have to figure out how to shim this open 5mm

Water pump-
p1127786_2.jpg

**What is the part number on the water pump?**
I just want to double check as it says NISSAN on the box!

These last two are not nessesary but I thought it was a good idea anyway
Clutch master cylender-

Motor mounts-
p1127786_4.jpg
Kind of embarrassing but I only ordered one mount (thinking they were sold in pairs) but talked to Aaron and he said not to worry about it. and here they are!

The rest tomorrow. I hope

Alright, I had a little we will call it a ‘hiccup’ with the pistons but everything is straightened out now.

So I stopped by TBS (The Block Shop) today to see if they have had a chance to start on my motor and was pleasantly surprised.

The guy that came up front was the one building my motor, he laughed and told me he just started on it yesterday. We started talking, he was telling me about the 400hp NA 7m he is building for his 4runner (he was just pulling it out of the 87 Supra when I came in) and how he has worked on Toyotas since the ‘70s.

But you don’t care about that, neither do I really but it is reassuring. So he brought me back to see my motor and well.. I had to take pictures.

You know how sometimes the little things seem to mean the most?
I didn’t ask them to paint the valve covers, I would have but thought they would send them out to get painted and I would get a $500 bill for it. But they just did it. Same with the harmonic balancer and brackets and things. I love the color too!

The guy building it (I should really learn his name) is absolutely meticulous. I should have taken a picture, he had sonic cleaned every bolt and they were neatly standing on a tray.

I did notice one thing though, I had bought a braided oil line and it was not installed. I’ll have to call them on Monday.
