I am rebuilding an 86.5 7mgte. My Chilton's says to torque the rod cap bolts to 33 ft/lbs for an 86 and 47 ft/lbs for an 87. I know for all practical purposes an 86.5 is considered an 87+, but I just want to clarify that I should be using the 47 ft/lb spec and not the 33 ft/lb. Has anyone else wondered this same question? What torque spec's is everyone using for the 86.5? Thanks for any help you can provide.

86 Supra = 5M

86.5-87 Supra = 7M

Thanks for the replies...I have been using both the chiltons, the 89 TSRM posted on cygnusx1.net, but I did not know about the 87 TSRM posted on-line...Thanks for posting the link! I knew that 47 ft/lbs was most likely the correct torque, but I wanted to double check to see what others thought. I am actually an electrical engineer by profession, so I can sometimes be a fanatic about some of the subtle details.
Does anyone know of an official Toyota document that talks about the 86.5 and its relation to the 87+?

No. But it's simple as hell sir.

if it has a 7M/1JZ and has a chassis code MA70/MA71/JZA70/JZA71.

It's considered a 87+.

Case closed.
