Picked up this car earlier today (white/blue 5 speed), and got to work on it. I drove it about 15 miles and the temperature gauge fluctuated before finally pegging the top when I got to the house. The previous owner replaced the radiator, fan clutch, and some other misc. stuff when it started overheating on him. He got tired of dumping money into it so it hadn't moved in over a year until today.
I personally think pre89 cars don't look all that appealing, so I'm not sure what I'm going to do with it. The car was dirt cheap for the condition it's in, and hopefully after changing the headgasket and some other tune up items it will run good again.

Just trying to get it running right now before I clean it up and figure out what to do with it. If it runs great when it's done then I'll probably keep it.

Day 2 of working on it was pretty much spent on cleaning up everything. I started cleaning the block, and them disassembled the head and dropped it off at the machine shop. I'm still surprised the car made it to 200K on the original headgasket.

The head should be done by Wed, and I'll have the gasket set by then...so just a waiting game now before it goes back together.

that headgasket doesnt look like an Original Toyota gasket, looks like a replacement Felpro or Stone headgasket. Looks like it either blew the HG or was replaced at some point in its life.

Got the head back and pretty much wrapped it up over the weekend.

The intake cam gear ripped the skin off the top of my hand

After some tech support from Scotty I got it running right :biglaugh:

Drove it about 10 miles today with new gas in it and it seemed to run fine.

Not too bad for a $300 car :icon_bigg

Now I just need to put the timing cover back on, and put some new shifter bushings in. The CD player looks like crap sitting in there, and I haven't bothered to see if it works yet. Now all I need to do is convert it to 89+ parts.

Found this in the car while cleaning it..

Idles great, and it ran fine when I drove it yesterday. I haven't taken it over 3K though, but I don't see any reason to drive it hard.
