40 + 40 * 0 + 1 = ?

Opinions, a little debate going on among some friends and I.

I say 1, others say 41 and yet others say 81....

My windows calculator says 1, my desk calculator says 41.

odd...

Your windows calculator says 1 because it's doing the math problems from start to finish, ignoring order of operations. Whereas your desk calculator, you're inputting the whole line then the calculator does it by order of operations.

Haha, calculator gave me an infinite sign, but it shout be 1, dividing by 0 cancels out every thing, so adding 1 to nothing is 1

Where do you see a dividing symbol? By order of operations you do multiplication, division then addition, subtraction.

So as Razoe already stated..

40 + (40 * 0) +1 =

40 + 0 + 1 =

40 + 1=

41

PEMDAS/ Order of operations

So its

40 + (40 * 0) +1 =

40 + 0 + 1 =

40 + 1=

41

Agreed with that (obviously), it is the correct answear.
Also agreed with previous IndigoMKII statement
Windows calculator make this mistake:
40 + 40 * 0 + 1=
80 * 0 + 1=
0+1=
1

BTW, I can't see how one can get 81!

You guys have reminded me of two things today:

-I've completely forgotten about order of operations, and

-I honestly haven't used "math" math in over 10 years now, which leads me to believe I'm incredibly lucky to have made it this far in life as well as I have.

It's funny how simple things like this are learned in 4th, 5th and 6th grade (maybe later if you were in the slow math class) and so many people forget it by the time they're 25. If you dont use it, you'll lose it.

They've have a bunch of these pop up on Facebook lately and it's crazy how many wrong answers are posted. I came across one that stumped me for some reason. That made me pretty ashamed since I've got an engineering degree... and I work as an engineer. :( Three years ago I got an A in Calculus 3 and now I have to stop and slowly think about basic algebra. Sigh.

Now you surely understand the saying, "I've forgotten more than most have learned?" I know I'm not there yet, but I do find myself occasionally scratching my head at things I know I should know...
