All, I'd like you to meet Betty, she's new to the family. Wasn't even looking for another car/project, but couldn't say no for $400. Car might actually be a 1948, not 100% certain yet, just picked it up a couple weeks ago.

Plans? Finish the Supra first (about a year, year and a half), then start making this thing a reality. For now, got a few dents to pound out, and 5 rusted bits (that I know of, pretty sure it's all of them though) to fix. Both front fenders have holes eaten through, the running boards under the doors are shot to hell, and the trunk panel. Good news is, the first 4 (fenders/doors) are easy enough to fix, given the shape. However... not looking forward to the trunk. Will likely just replace it, given the odd shape/curve to it, and a complete lack of experience with an English Wheel.

Who knows though? For now, she is a blank canvas, and other than a trunk panel (if I find one close enough), I won't spend a dollar on this until the Supra is done. Plans down the road? Hard to say, I change my mind more often than I blink with things like this.

Anyway, on to the pictures! Any questions, just let me know. :)

Sweet ass 6 lug wheels... tires are older than me, but still holding air!

Color code leads us to believe it's a 1948...

Anyone know what they made old steering wheels from? This crap just crumbles in your hands... very delicate anymore, but has a steel ring in the center for a frame...

Found a couple old bee (hornet?) nests in the car, this was in a seat, the other under a fender...

This, we initially thought, was a seat heater, as it sits right under the seat, and has coolant lines running into it. Looking at it a bit more though, I think it is a rear seat heater, it blows air into the back seat area of the car.

And here's where all the trim, spare parts, etc... is. Mostly a complete car, and it's been like a puzzle trying to figure out what goes where, kind of fun, really. :)

Like I said, any questions, just let me know.

Restore? I'm more a resto-mod kind of guy. It needs a new master cylinder, but it's not a normal one from what I can tell, at least not anymore. Do you have any idea how hard it can be finding parts for things this old? ARRRRRGH! :p

Ideally, I want to make this into something I can drive to Vegas, Phoenix, Cali, etc... in comfort, and not worry about something breaking on me, or my old carb'd engine running like piss because it's tuned to run at 6500'...

2jz swap? I'm actually kind of leaning that way. They sound good, make adequate power, I have plenty of parts to make it happen, and the engine bay was designed for an inline 6. Even measured out room for an intercooler and radiator a couple days ago, I can make it happen. I literally cannot throw a stick in this town without hitting SOMETHING with a ratty old iron block SBC... If anything GM, it will be either one of the 4.2 Atlas I6 engines, or a 5.3 LS variant.

Yes to the 2JZ swap?

Nice!
Yeah, way ahead of you there buddy. :D

Ls7! :D My second choice is the 2jz.

Edit: The 2jz is bumped down to 3rd, to make room for the 4.2 I6.
LS7 would be incredibly badass, but I'm trying to have a complete and done car for 10k or less. LS7 would throw that right out the window...

As for the 4.2 I6, we can thank Limequat on here for the inspiration for that. I can easily argue that it's the best I6 that GM has ever made. Might arguably be the best inline engine they've made, period.

DISCLAIMER: Guys, I really don't want to get any expectations up here, this is my first foray into body work, modification, restoration... really, anything other than simple mechanical work and you know, DRIVING. I'm a complete noob here, but I have some really good mentors to help teach me this stuff. That said, nothing but pounding dents, drinking (root) beer, and dreaming/drawing up ideas is going to happen on this for the next year or so. Gotta finish the Supra first. ;)

Well, got a wild hair up my ass this past Saturday, and decided to remove the front fenders, bumper, grille, and rear fenders. Never sheared so many bolts in my life, and ended up having to use the Dremel to remove a rounded bolt head. Had to pick up a set of standard tools too, but those will come in handy.

Surprised how light this car is without anything in it or a drivetrain... can push it around easier than my Mk2. Now, to get started on repairing those rusted out spots on the front fenders.

Also found an odd spot of rust, I'll have to get some more pictures up when I get the fenders out of the garage to work on them...

So, semi-serious question here... if this were your car, what would you use to power it, given the following criteria:

-6500' altitude, with intentions to drive it in lower and higher elevations without the need to tune
-300-400ish HP required, decent torque to suit
-has to fit (obviously, so a V10, V12, radial, Catepillar, etc. are out)
-engine has to be in and running for say, $3000 ish.

What would YOU do? Trying to plan ahead here... won't be another year or so before things get moving in a serious direction here, but it's always good to have a plan...

Oh, and Rock Auto FTMFW! Turns out, there are a couple companies that make all sorts of reproduction parts and body gaskets for these old things... reasonably priced too, the only thing that I said, "well that's a bit rich" to was the re-chromed grille, at ~$420.00. Otherwise, I can get new running boards, and a bit other other things I'll surely need.

The car is awesome!! I have been wanting to do a old 40's or 50's car.

Your cheapest route for an engine would probably be a SBC with a set of aluminum heads, intake manifold, nice carb, decent cam, lifters, and rocker arms. But tuning may be an issue between elevation changes. If EFI is something you want to tackle, a Vortec 350 or LT1 would work good. Put a cam and associated parts, get a tuner and bam easy hp and tq.

If I had the car, I would use an engine I'm familiar with. 7M-GE/GTE or 1UZ-FE for me. If the engine bay is wide enough then I would go for a 1UZ, with a set of small turbos, maybe CT-26 with the factory waste gates. If the 1UZ would not fit, I would do a 7M-GTE. I bet the engine bay is more accommodating for the L6, with that I would do something crazy with the exhaust and intake.

Chambers, the engine bay is actually VERY similar to a Mk3, in dimensions. A 1uz could possibly fit, and it's on the list. As is a 7m, if only for the sound. A diesel would be cool, but probably out of budget. A Chevy SBC isn't off the table, but it would have to be a 283, 302, or a 327, and not cost a fortune. Stock LS1 or LS6? Maybe...

Like I've said, all up in the air for now. A 2j would still be pretty badass, and nice for the elevation. I'd have to paint "CHEVROLET" on the valve covers though. :)

You know I'm a JZ guy and would tell you a JZ but the only other motor I would say to use would be the 1UZ from the early years because they are super beefy on the inside.

So, I could use some soundtrack advice on this car too. What would you listen to while cruising around in something like this? I'm thinking...

-Social Distortion
-Easy E
-Hank Williams III
-?

Same engine Combo Random used in his project, it's gonna be a bit "fat" so is going to need the low/midrange power/torque Brad!
