Who Has Fit 5-1/4'' Speakers In Front Stock Speaker Pods?? ('88)

I am doing some research on replacing my front and rear speakers, and am wondering if I can squeeze some 5-1/4" speakers in the front. Has anyone had success with this, without replacing the speaker pods??

I am willing to do a little cutting, but nothing major. Pics would be good.

Also, I have read many different opinions on what can fit in the back, without modification. Can anyone confirm what fits?? Was stock 5-1/4"??

By the way, I am thinking about these speakers. Any opinion? They are on e-bay for pretty cheap.

Or, if I should just stick to the 4" up front, how are these speakers?

Thanks

Rear speakers are football shaped toyota specific speakers. No one makes them anymore (aftermarket). But 5 1/4 will fit but won't be a direct drop in, the space around the speaker will need to be sealed. Even with fabrication 5 1/4 will not seal in front pods because of the weird shape of the front wall. 4" in front is the best in this case if you want to use stock boxes. MMD on Infinitys can be sharp at times, Silk doesn't have this problem, but its personal preference.

I fit a set of 5.25's in the front panel, and sealed them. It took alot of work but I got it done. I don't THINK I have any pictures but I'll take a look later ( Read as: probably not getting any pictures ;) )

i took the front door speaker pod and took it apart (its a two piece pod). and placed the back or front on a think piece of MDF or a think sheet of flexable plastic (i used flex plastic) and traced the outline of it. then cut out the wholes for the screws and then cut out the whole for the 5.25 speaker. i didnt make any spacers because the window is so far back. sorry i dont have any pics.

hey, thanks. pictures would be cool, but if not, no worries.

when you say it took a lot of work, what are we talkin? cutting up the speaker pods, but how much? just trying to gauge the difficulty involved.

did it turn out good, to where you couldn't notice with the door panel back on?

thanks!

Don't front pods have like a liter and half of internal space? maybe even less, not enough space for a 5 1/4 to sound right. definitely not worth the benefit with all the effort, plus that port will smudge the sound. 5 1/4" is only marginally better then 4" in bass response. I had problems fitting aftermarket 4" midrange in stock pods because of the depth problem. 4" with stock port will even give louder bass than a 5 1/4" sealed in such tiny space. But you can keep 4" in the pods and add 5 1/4" midranges under the box in the carpeted part of the door and just skip the rears, then there will be some kind of use from 5 1/4", otherwise 6.5" in front in free-air will make more sense, its not that hard to do. Definitely not harder than to fit 5 1/4" in front pods, but results will be better.

when you say free-air, do you mean not sealed tight in the pod? and there are more ways for air to flow in and out of the pod?

so maybe I could do 6.5, and make the pod "free-air"? any opinion on speakers? I'm thinking inifinity kappa, but am up for suggestions.

I still want to throw speakers in the rear, just my preference. I will go with 5.25 rounds back there.

if you look at what i wrote that explains the free air custom peice to make and just a little something extra i did was add a 4'' to the bottom corner. so i actually have a 5.25 and 4 in teh same door.

No free-air is when there is no back part of the box. The box is the door its self and the front of the speaker is isolated from the back. Also called infinite baffle or IB set up, you achieve it when a box is larger than the VAS value of the driver. IB and ported set ups usually louder than a sealed set up in lower register. You can see in this file the difference in response "sealed VS ib" of an average 5 1/4 speaker. http://www.cdtaudio.com/pdf/HD-5_07.pdf

notice how much louder 100hz and below the speaker plays in IB config.

I haven't pulled the door panel, so I am not too familiar with the stock speaker pod, but I like this idea.

so, I can make a custom half to the stock pod? and screw it together?

was yours sealed tight, or are there vents?

I don't have any pics handy. The car at Driftmotion right now, as soon as i get it back i'll take the pictures, or if i go there to visit i'll take the camera with me. But i can tell you that it doesnt look much different from your 4". the only thing that was a headache was the magnet clearing the 4" box and metal of the door that i had to cut to fit the magnet. But with shallow mounts or neodymium that will be no problem.

im sorry i didnt make myself more clear. I use the one half of the pod for a trace. then after you use the pod for the trace of the new flat fitment you throw the pod away or sell it. non of the old pod is used for this method and yeah if you match the holes up the same (after you trace the outline you make or drill the holes right away) it fits like a glove really. i will have to post a pic soon of it.

Edit: i didnt answer the second half of your question. its a flat pannel that you are making so its open air. no seal no vents

thanks for clarifying, that sounds like a good project! I wish there were pics out there of a finished product, shown from under the door panel.

I will post up pics when I start this project soon. any suggestions on sources for the flexible plastic??

thanks

True. Guitar does sound good on Kappas. Why? MMD. Metal Matrix Diaphragm tweeter. Strings are metal, so are plates, that's why metal musical instruments sound more realistic on "metallic" compound than on silk. Kappas are very good for acoustical music, very very good. Rap/hip-hop - not so much.
