How to: Prime your CT12/CT20/CT26 with oil

This is for a turbo or turbos that are already off the car.

Supplies & Tools Needed
14mm socket or wrench
Filter wrench
Lint free rags
Brake cleaner, non petroleum base. CRC works great.
Clean drain pan
Coffee filter
Clean oil (enough for an oil change)
Flexible pipe cleaners
17mm socket
2 foot socket extension
Woble / Elbow / Ujoint for socket extension
Fuse puller
New Drain line to block gasket (3 hole)
New CT26 oil flange gasket (4 hole)
Razor blade
Sanding block with 220 or finer
New copper crush washers for banjo bolt
Assistant / Buddy / Wife / GF

Preparation steps

Drain engine oil into CLEAN oil pan. If possible, catch the oil midstream with the coffee filter.

Inspect for debris or metal(s).

Inspect oil pan for debris or metal(s).

Remove old oil filter from engine.

Inspect for debris if possible.

Verify that the O ring is not stuck to the oil filter manifold.

Remove new oil filter from box. Fill with fresh engine oil.

While the pan continues to drain, remove EFI fuse.

Inspect the turbo for shaft play, both radially and axially.

Inspect the turbine wheel and compressor wheel for damage.

Inspect the exhaust manifold for FOD inside the turbo charger flange area.

Install new manifold to turbo gasket if needed.

Inspect the oil feed & return ports for FOD (foreign object debris.)

Inspect the oil port in the block for FOD. Inspect for any stuck crush washers.

Inspect the oil lines for cracks, being crushed or physical damage.

Use the sanding block to make sure the oil flanges are flat on the oil tube(s).

Clean the oil tubes with brake cleaner. Clean the tubes internally with the pipe cleaner(s).

Rinse with plenty of brake cleaner.

Clean the banjo bolt with brake cleaner.

Use pipe cleaners for stubborn carbon depsoits.

Clean the flange area on the turbo of all dirt, debris, and old gasket. Be sure to use the razor blade.

Caution Make sure no debris (such as pieces of gasket) fall into the turbo oil return or oil inlet.

Use the lint free rag with brake cleaner applied to clean the surface.

Install

Install the new gasket on the turbo oil feed/return surface.

Install the clean oil return and feed pipe system.

Torque*:

9-12ft lbs

*Torque may depend on gasket manufacturer's specifications. Refer to the OEM service manual for more detail.

Install block to oil return flange gasket.

Caution: Do not use RTV or FIPG on the gasket as it may enter the engine and cause damage.

Install turbo on manifold.

Tighten* down turbo to manifold nuts.

*Refer to the OEM manual for torque value.

Take caution to use antiseize on the nuts.

Install nuts on the block oil to turbo return flange.

Torque*:

9-12ft lbs

*Torque may depend on gasket manufacturer's specifications. Refer to the OEM service manual for more detail.

Install the banjo bolt with two crush washers into engine oil feed port.

A small amount of grease may be used to keep the washers in place during installation.

Do not tighten the banjo bolt at this time.

Clean and inspect the oil pan bolt for FOD.

Install & tighten the oil pan bolt.

Install new oil filter. Do not use the filter wrench to tighten.

Fill engine with engine oil according to engine capacity or user preference.

With the aid of your assistant, crank the car over untill you can confirm oil comming out of the loose banjo bolt.

Verify that the engine oil is clean.

Tighten the banjo bolt.

Torque*:

*See your OEM service manual*

Again, with the aid of your assistant, crank the car (in intervals) untill confirmation of oil pressure is shown on the oil pressure gauge.

Inspect for leaks on the turbocharger oiling system.

Once pressure has been verified, install the EFI fuse.

Note: Install all needed sensors and piping at this time including the air filter.

Start the engine.

Monitor engine oil pressure.

Shut off the engine.

Remove the intake tract off of the turbo(s).

Inspect for oil leaks and turbine/compressor wheel rotation.

If the inspection proves that the unit rotates freely, and there are no oil leaks, reinstall the needed sensors and piping.

Enjoy your car.
