"Fixable" is a relative term. A modern cat is composed of a ceramic substrate covered with a wash coat of precious metals. If the wash coat on an intact substrate hasn't been overly contaminated and is contaminated with something that can be vaporized it's possible this'll work. It's a last...
Well, if the mixture varies even a little from what's correct and stays there for a certain time the O2 sensor will report that to the TCCS as a fault and should set one of two codes. It'll only do that if the igniton key has been cycled twice with the problem present both times. Maybe it's not...
Stock is good. Means it'll be easy to fix because Toyo's engineering hasn't been hacked. They're really isn't an accurate way to know mixture without measuring it. If the engine was capable of holding a tight mixture on it's own it wouldn't need an EFI system and a feedback lambda loop. It's...
Jay: I wish. I'm just a lowly bus driver who used to design machines for a living. Granted, they were pretty fancy machines compared to 80's cars, but I'm far from a whiz on most things. I do confess to being a philomath though. Might even make it to polymath one day ;)
Supra90: I see you're a...
Thanks Jay. We'll see. I'm conflicted between helping those who need help, suffering those who're beyond help, and sparring with those who know enough to be dangerous. It all depends on how the balance shifts from one day to the next. Not to mention this pompous ass doesn't have a lot of time...
Do as suggested but if the battery is in good condition the engine should not die when you remove the jumper cables. In fact the ECU even adjusts to a low battery so something goofy is going on there. In addition to testing the ALT have the battery tested and check the wiring. Sounds to me like...
You have to take that 8-10 micron screen thing with a big grain of salt. Bigger than 8-10 microns anyway. No way those screens are that fine. You could buy some readily available mesh calibration media and try sifting it. I've never done that but long ago checked a Trasko screen with an optical...
What Nick and lagged said. A crank no start is *not* a security system symptom. The system will not allow cranking. It has no connection to the EFI system, only the cranking circuit.
Blown fuses are not the cause of a problem, they're a symptom. Start by carefully examining any wiring near hot parts. The O2 sensor is a good place to start. If you don't find a problem carry spare fuses because it's almost sure to happen again.
An excellent post by SM. Accurate and covered it all nicely.
Magnets remove only ferrous materials and any in an engine missed by the filter are too small to make any real difference. In hydraulic systems it's a different story though, that's why your tranny has one. If it makes you feel good...
That German Castrol stuff sucks...too thin ;)
Maybe Johnathan, maybe not. We'll see but to be honest it's not looking good at this point. Until I decide for sure I'll do as always and offer advice via PM here or in public at mkiiitech. Besides, from what I read jdub has a very good handle on...
Why would synthetic cause leaks? Especially in a low mileage engine? Another old myth survives.
Re Mobil One: Only the 5-30EP and 15-50EP has been provent to contain Grp III but since XOM steadfastly refuses to confirm or deny it the entire M1 line is suspect. Keep in mind the EP line is...
Tsk tsk mrnickleye. That's downright painful to hear coming from a long time professional mechanic.
A 0-30 or a 5-30 would both be a 30W when hot and they'd both be a lot thicker than a 30 or 40 when cold so how could that hurt the engine? The 0 wouldn't be as thick as the 5 but they'd both...
I've never seen a two stoke with a cat but ok, not a problem. Since you're an authority this stuff and emissions equipment to boot I've deleted my post so others may receive the benefit of your experience.
Since I'm having so much fun tonight I'll throw out a bone before I go. It's the least I can do for the entertainment that was provided ;)
You can check it on either 1 or 6 (it's a waste spark DLI system) but the IDL contact in the TPS *must* be closed in order to set initial timing. The idle...
I was only pointing out the hole he dug himself into. By doing so he came across as a fool. And you'll note I didn't respond to this thread before even though I could've easily told him all the tricks mentioned and a bunch more. Why didn't I? Because he obviously wanted his hand held. Five...
"I have a good multimeter and good wiring knowledge".
"What is the best way to hook the multimeter up to the electrical system to measure the current when the car is off? Do you have a diagram?"
"How do you test or hook up your multimeter for "perisitic" current draw"
"Did I ever say I...
