    Radiator Cap

Sigh...another example of the continuing death spiral of science education in America. I just told you, the coolant will rise and fall but should always be the same level in the tank when cold. If not you're losing coolant somewhere. What do you mean how does it work? When things are heated they...

    Radiator Cap

Pressure guy, not temp. Let's back up a bit: Your car has what is called a pressurized closed reservoir system. In days of yore systems were open and operated at atmospheric pressure. There was not enough heat load generated by the engine to make the coolant boil so pressurization wasn't...

    Radiator Cap

Thank you Colin. I was unaware of that. Call me cheap but the cap on my engine is the same one that came with it. It gets tested twice a year and as long as it checks out I've refused to replace it. Zero problems thus far. KA: if the vacuum valve jiggles (loose) it's the weighted type. They...

    Radiator Cap

In my experience many people don't appreciate how much engineering actually goes into a closed reservoir system cap or how they even work. IIRC the standard cap is 32mm ID and designed for a 16mm deep filler neck. It's known in the cooling biz as a mini cap (versus the micro cap that appeared...

Like batteries out gas on their own....

    EGR valve ?

Not only does a lack of EGR promote detonation and increase emissions but as jimi correctly pointed out also increases EGT. So the engine will run cooler that way? There won't be more thermal load placed on everything from the head to the exhaust and cooling systems? Ok, if you say so. Makes...

    EGR valve ?

Some facts: First, EGT is not a "token" effort. It's an effective way to reduce NOx emissions. If you think it's token try measuring NOx while it's disabled Second, EGR does suppress detonation. This is true in any engine. That said I'm aware EGR isn't ECU controlled on the MKIII in the same...

    EGR valve ?

That's just plain wrong on several points. I'm tired of repeating about how EGR works in this car and the so called "benefits" of removing it so I'll just say the OP had better listen to Nick.

Quick Q: How to remove stock oil filter?

Most people use oil. They also tighten them like it says on the filter, not realizing it's only because the filter companies want to avoid the liability of one coming off ;) Keep in mind when I say "by hand" I don't always mean bare hand. Sometimes I use the sandpaper trick, sometimes gloves...

Quick Q: How to remove stock oil filter?

Can't recall the last time I couldn't take one off by hand on any of my vehicles. Hell, I don't even own a filter wrench. Then again I don't use oil on the gasket either. I either put it on dry or use Dow Corning DC-4.

Quick Q: How to remove stock oil filter?

Wrap a length of coarse sandpaper around it for a better grip. And what Matt said....most filters are put on way too tight.

    octane and timing pull

You're doing fine Dub. Although Toyota uses two different types of knock sensors along with two different algorithms (wide and narrow band on both) I don't recall which is used in our cars. I believe it's the narrow band setup but I could be wrong. Doward's data would be enlightening and would...

Toyota replaced head gasket, should I be concerned?

Mine is not far from that condition at twice the mileage. I bought it new and like yours it's been well cared for and garaged it's entire life. Still feels pretty much as the day I rolled it off the dealer's lot. Considering what I paid you shouldn't feel too bad ;)

    Hose kit?

Silicone's heat handling properties are it's strength. Unfortunately that property reduces it's stiffness. It can be used for coolant (in fact it works better for that than most materials) but only when it has a reinforced wall to prevent expansion or collapse. Don't use it for fuel and oil as...

    Hose kit?

Keep in mind not all silicone hose is created equal. Some have more silicone than others. The HT stuff has a high content so it's good quality. It's normally used only for vacuum though. That said not all vacuum hoses should be replaced with silicone. Depends on the length versus diameter and...

Toyota replaced head gasket, should I be concerned?

I'll go out on a limb and say she bought it there. Probably had all prior servicing done there as well so they must have known her from day one. Just a guess though. At any rate yeah, it's a nice find. Proves how a car will degrade very slowly in Cali's climate if well cared for.

Toyota replaced head gasket, should I be concerned?

The proverbial "driven by a little old lady only on Sunday" car. Interesting the dealer would replace everything on the first invoice for no charge in 1998, even if the mileage was only 35K.

No Spark, Oil and carbon all over plugs (pics)

Lol, nothing is going to happen next. I have better things to do than get into a pissing match with some kid. Cars may be different but the basics are all the same. If he knew his way around them he wouldn't be doing any of the things he's doing. He would know how to measure an O2 sensor, how to...

No Spark, Oil and carbon all over plugs (pics)

Attitude? Didn't feel there was much. I tried to help and couldn't so I gave up. I do that with lots of people once I reach the conclusion they either haven't the technical expertise to follow directions or simply refuse to. I also expect people asking for help to accurately answer questions...
