What 3p said. Because the ISCV has no positional feedback device on it (an optical encoder for example) the ECU has no way of knowing where it is unless it homes it at every engine shutdown. It does this by stepping the pintle full open just after you turn the key off.
In your car the throttle...
SS5000: Yes, the cost of new cars, taxes, insurance, tags, etc, plus depreciation of those funds over a 20 year period is substantial. The figure would be even higher but the stock market hasn't been helping much since 2001.
I modded in it 1989 and then wailed on it for 7 years. Got it all out...
There's no manual setting of the ISCV. As you said, the ECU homes it after every engine shut down. The little penis looking thing is called a pintle. Just because you hear the motor step doesn't mean the pintle is moving. Shut the engine down, unplug the ISCV, then restart the engine. Idle...
Nick: Ok, I get you now. Good point. With the rich mixture his O2 is no doubt down so the cat isn't getting enough for oxidation, especially during open loop. It's why I wanted to know O2. Either that or it's already been killed by the HC. Wish I knew PPM so I could make a better guess on engine...
What he said. If they're not too buggered try dipping the screwdriver tip into course valve lapping compound. If that doesn't work a hand impact tool will remove them. You can also slot them and try a flat bladed screwstick.
And people say California is tough. I'd rather deal with an ASM15/25 than the IM240 any day. Cali cutoff points are tighter but the IM240 is a lot more demanding.
I think he might be feeling oil is getting down into the plug wells but I'm not sure where he'd be going with that unless he's...
No problem. Usually when someone needs help with aftermarket stuff I'll chase down an online manual and study it but since Aaron has such a handle on this gadget I didn't see a need to do it. I'm sure with his help you'll get it figured out. I agree it sounds like a wiring issue.
I have no interest in breaking it. My goal is to keep it in very good condition while making it last as long as possible. So far it's the cheapest to own and most reliable car I've ever had. Every day it puts money back into my pocket, money I use to make more to spend on far more important...
With the stock ecu no spark will result in no injection. I dunno much about the stinger but I'm assuming it doesn't require IGf from the igniter. As for IGt you should be measuring it referenced to +12. Measuring it referenced to ground won't get you anything because IGt is an active low signal...
What the Nickmeister said. HC is not a valid indicator of mixture richness. The engine could be into lean misfire and generate high HC. Need the other gases, especially CO
As pointed out it's not difficult thanks to the car's modular construction but it is time consuming.
As for the core itself they usually fail from bad cooling system maintenance or use of the wrong coolant which attacks the solder in copper cores. You'd need to see how yours failed to be sure...
Good post staticpat. If his car always had a 51 it makes me wonder about his timing because doing it with IDL possibly open is bad news. I wonder how many people just stick the diag jumper in and time away. Timing should never be set without first verifying the MIL is flashing a normal code...
True, many cars no longer have EGR. Lots of older ones didn't either. I own a 1981 vehicle that doesn't have EGR yet still passes because of the cat's larger reduction bed.
The point was loaded emissions (Enhanced Testing) came into being because of the requirement for testing NOx. The two...
