Rod shortening as an alternative to a thicker headgasket

Why doesn't the TSRM talk about this? I see checks for rod bend and twist, but nothing at all on roundness or rod bolt lengths. What are the acceptable limits for the big-ends?

New Engine Set-Up Finally In *PICS*

How did you go about sealing your oil pan to the block with the scraper in place and that extra space at the front and back where the aluminum covers are?

'89 supra turbo race car build up

Hold on a moment! Lets get our names straight. There are two separate pieces here, and they have both been called the "timing cover" at one point or another. The piece attached to the head behind the cams is more accurately called the "No 2 timing chain cover", and the piece attached to the...

Rod shortening as an alternative to a thicker headgasket

They are at the machine shop. I will doublecheck as soon as I get them back. However, everything I have mic'd so far is perfect! lol it's kinda freaky sometimes. For example, the oil pump. The gears had ZERO wear on them. It's a 140,000km car with religious maintenance all it's life.

Rod shortening as an alternative to a thicker headgasket

Sorry yes I forgot to say that this motor has never seen rodknock and the rods are perfect.

Rod shortening as an alternative to a thicker headgasket

Those were my thoughts as well. I talked to Reg Reimer here in Calgary and he has never had a broken bolt. So I've decided not to get the rods resized afterall. This lets me use toyota bearings, and not worry about any rod clearance issues after the resize operation. Apparently there's...

Rod shortening as an alternative to a thicker headgasket

Does anyone know of any 7M engines that actually broke the stock rod bolts? (Where there was no rod knock present and clearances were good).

    PS steering rack boot replacement

Dexron II is an old classification, kind of like API-SF for engine oil when these days the most recent spec is API-SM. For ATF fluid, you want Dexron III. Any Dexron III ATF fluid should do the trick. I'd spring for some Mobil 1 synthetic ATF myself.

Opinions needed on tranny shifter (R154)

The bushing on the bottom of your shifter pivot looks deformed, I'd replace it. Search for "green shifter bushing" and you'll get a TON of hits on this stuff. Like this: http://www.supramania.com/forums/showthread.php?t=7079

Calculating the static compression ratio on a stock 7MGTE

Maybe the block where the '20 thou' measurement was taken had been decked in the past and they didn't realize it? :dunno: This is one case where I'd love to have my block at a point where I could check! But it's completely disassembled at the moment. :biglaugh:

Calculating the static compression ratio on a stock 7MGTE

Not according to IJ. Apparently the pistons protrude 20 thou stock.

Tire Shredder's MK2 7MGE budget NA screamer build thread

Great work! Thanks for the porting pictures... it's good to have a double-check reference. I'm just in the middle of porting my own head and I took a ton of pictures. It's up on supraclub.ca Anyway, I'd like to know if you sanded/ported the valve guides where they protrude into the air tract...

how to change your low and mids on maftpro

Two other things I noticed... your displacement is set to 2.9 litres, is this something you have calculated? Stock is 2.952 litres, I see you're 0.20 overbore (JE pistons?) so that changes things, but it's unlikely to lower your displacement. When running in speed density mode you want the...

Calculating the static compression ratio on a stock 7MGTE

I'm going to calculate the stock compression ratio using numbers found in different threads, and a couple other sources. So I've read a bit-o-this and a bit-o-that....... Sources Compression Ratio Explained: http://www.team-integra.net/sections/articles/showarticle.asp?ArticleID=233...

Rod shortening as an alternative to a thicker headgasket

IJ, do you mean that the pistons in a completely stock 7MGTE protrude from the block deck (what I originally thought you meant), or that the "deck" refers to the head deck, meaning 20 thou of space in-between the top sides of the piston and the head deck surface? When I try to account for a...

    Testing VF,confusing results...

Not possible because of open loop, right? What about just lean? Closed-loop and vf1 is outputting an (assumed incorrect) lean signal of 0v? Or is this also not possible? hehe ;-) I am basing my assumption on this sentence: "Result of Ox sensor signal processing: 0v=Lean or Open loop condition"

    Lapping Compound...which grit?

What's the clover leaf stuff made from? (Edit: I see three abrasives for 'Clover lapping compounds'. My guess is White Aluminum Oxide for the Medium grade, although I'd want to use Boron Carbide). I've also heard a recommendation to use silicone in all the bolt holes, let it dry, and then pull...
