so the unit does nothing unless im using the brakes? correct
it does not have the abilty to help control traction, like modern traction control systems?

It is NOT a traction control device. It is only for ABS. Also a note: Supras have a 3-channel system, there are 3 sensors. Unless you are talking about a JZA70, which does have a 4-channel setup.

i believe jdm wise it was introduced sometime in 87
have you check the hatch vin to see if it matches the firewall?

edit: correct information as follows:
all cars with 4esc stickers still only had 3 sensor abs, it wasn't until cars then got the 4abs sticker in 89 sometime that it was changed to 4 wheel :)

Hence, the name. Control the skid, not the traction. A skid is when the brakes are locked. You can not steer too well when the wheels are locked.

I spy a 79-81 Celica Supra in front.

I just looked through my Aus, Japan, Europe, and North American parts catalogs. Only the JZA70 had 4-channel ABS.

Obviously the other models still had 4-wheel ABS, just not 4-channel.
