what are these hard lines

I have seen in multiple pictures that on the passenger side of the vehicle, there are two hard lines that come out of the firewall underneath the charcoal vaccuum canister. what are these lines for? where are they supposed to go?

the vehicle is a 1989 mkiii. N/A

wow...ive havnt posted anything on here for like 5 years...... anyway sounds like the A/C lines your describing, aluminum, one a bit larger than the other?
