Hey guys. I just moved to Oak Ridge, TN about a month ago and need to find a local shop that's got Supra or Toyota experience. Not just piddly stuff. I may need a headgasket swap, so I need a place that knows what they're doing. Can anyone recommend some? Thanks.

Thanks for the info. There seems to be a lack of serious support for the Supra around here. Hopefully, something will turn up.

Hey man, sorry I didn't find this earlier, but I have a good machine shop I'd recommend. They're called American Automotive & Machine. Their phone number is 777-9400 and they're located off of the Lovell Rd. Exit (Exit 374) on I-40. I have used them on multiple occasions for supra related work (having heads machined, other parts hot tanked, etc.) and would recommend them. To add to the comfort level, another supra owner who lives in Oak Ridge has used them as well. Even my dad used them for his '69 Chevelle SS 454 motor. They did nice work on the 3 angle valve job for his heads and I will continue to use them.

Thanks for getting back with me. Better late than never. So, they do more than just machining and custom stuff? They do actual maintenance and work like headgaskets? That's great to know there's actually a shop that close. How is their pricing too?

They don't do the actual work, but they do the machining. If you need someone to work on a supra and knows what they're doing...I'm always around. :)

Thanks for the offer, Drake. I'll keep you in mind for the future. I'm not planning on anything major any time soon, but it's nice to know I have a local to call on if I'm in a bind. I'll PM you if I need some help some time.

That's ok, I believe you.

I had more before the crash too, but not many.

Thanks for the offer on the help too. It's nice to have a local guy or two to call on if I'm in a bind.

So, why the bad feelings about Protoy? Have you had a bad experience yourself, or was it someone you know?

I never let ProToy work on my car, but have met the owner several times. I first met him when i went to check out a mk3 that he had believe it or not. He was claiming 350 hp, and i hadnt had my car too long, so i figured id go check it out. So we talk for a few, and then he pops the hood and there it is... a mk3 N/A motor with some big nasty truck turbo on it. he then proceeds to tell me that it was originally a turbo motor and yadda yadda... the distributor and plug wires, among other small descrepencies, must be because it was a canadian model.... right. so then he tells me how fast it is so we decide to go line them up. his 350 hp beast to my 260 hp beast. should be no contest, right? I spanked him, from a dig, and a roll. so either he's full of crapola, or he cant drive. A couple weeks later he blew the headgasket and sold it.

I've also dealt with him when i worked at Advance Auto Parts, he bought from the store i worked at. he really never seemed to know what he was talking about or trying to fix. I could be reading too much into it, but i'd never let him touch my car.

just my opinion i guess, since i've never let them work on my car, but first impressions go a LONG way.

Ok, that's good to know. I figured they knew their stuff, and I was excited to know there was a Toyota specialist in the area. I guess I'll just stick to SUPRA specialists like you guys. Thanks again.
