the end of the shifter that goes in the transmission, as the mk4 uses the shifter extension that i believe is mounted outside the transmission, but the shifter on a mk3 is placed inside the transmission IIRC (mk3 = round shifter socket end uses a cylindrical looking bushing, mk4 looks totally different)

I thought the extension was only used for SC300s? Does the mk4 also use an extension?

I too remember reading somewhere that the R154 and at least the mk3 w58 used the same shifter mechanism. No real experience with it though.
