OK so I have thought about this a long time and have observed highway behaviour a great deal... so I'll just bite the bullet and throw this question out there.

Is there something wrong with people who buy Mazda 3's. As far as I'm concerned they are menaces on the road, and will do ANYTHING for a kill. Boarderline retarded? Missing a chromosome?

I would like to stress It can't be epidemic but it seems the majority of people who own these cars pick RIDICULOUS races, have no concept of their vehicles limit or reality for that matter. But they do keep winning out of the other driver's serious concern for the Mazda 3 owner's mental health.

Am I completely right here. It's gotta be the majority of Mazda 3 owner's who act this way. So what's up with that?

I have never noticed anything out of the ordinary as far as people who own/drive Mazda 3's.

I think you may potentially be crazy.

(Also, I think you may mean an extra chromosome?)

Ya, I've noticed this kind of trend over the years. The car changes, but it's always cheap, usually slow, and popular with the kids who don't know any better. Back in the 90's it was Ford Escorts.

What happens is the kids just old enough to drive get their hands on a car, they don't have the experience behind the wheel to understand the difference between an econobox and a Ferrari and no grasp of the danger that several tons of rubber, steel, and gasoline actually means. Their only real world experience so far has been bicycles - and in the world of bikes, someone with a shitty bike can still kick the crap out of the next kid with a fancy bike as long as he can pedal hard enough. The same doesn't hold true in the world of automobiles, but that simply hasn't sunk in yet.

The good news is that you're actually doing the world a service if you kick the piss out of 'em. Once they realize that their cars really aren't all that fast, they generally settle down and spend their money on huge stereos until they hit legal drinking age. ;)

While I agree with the general trend and most of the specifics, Grim, I haven't noticed this to be attributed to the Mazda 3, but I have a feeling this may be a regional thing.

I'll agree with the Mazda 3, it's common around here with that crowd (you know, the douchebag with his hat on crooked, etc).

My old lady has a Mazda3, it's not a bad car, with a manual it would be fun, but the automatic kinda kills it. Acceleration really isn't much to brag about, but it's a good chassis for running through canyons if you have some decent tires on it. Part of it might be that there's no fear to be had with the FWD, I have never worried about anything other than possibly plowing through a corner a bit haha...

Either way it's not good. It's complete insanity on the 401 in Toronto. I've seen Corvettes back off just because, I don't know, I guess they like living. It's gotta be a key demographic they've tapped into. If that's true they have a GENIUS marketing department. How do you attract only one specific personality type? The Genius of that....

I had a Mazdaspeed3 GT. It was a monster on the freeway. Lots of torque. Never lets up all the way to 150mph. Slap a few common mods on it like dp/intake/exh/bov etc... and they can easily hang with a 350-400hp Supra because they only weight 3000 lbs.

I haven't noticed anything strange in particular about their owners' racing habits though.
