Alright guys i have a 91 supra....I have 6.5 JL VR components in the front doors...what can i put in the hatch area and also the speaker area by the rear seats to make it sound "good" without a sub or amp? I got my hands on a pair of Pioneer 4 inch speakers because I read on another thread that the speakers in the hatch area were 4" but now guys area saying that they are 5.25? And what is the size of those speakers by the seats? I read Prodigys post in Factory speaker size thread...but are they really oval and 3.5? Hell do I even need to use the damn hatch speakers or can I just put some speakers in the rear by the passenger seats and be done with it?

Obviously I am not an Audio specialist so go easy on me...
thanks for your help guys

This is a good link to see whats available for your application. It tells what decks and speakers will fit and what size they are. You can scroll down and select the item you are looking for and browse the brands. Alpine is a good all around brand for sound quality without an amp. Although if you dont have an aftermarket deck they arent going to sound they way you want them to anyways.
Hope this helps.

Well, personally, I found that rear speakers in the Supra just make things sound worse, not better. The only thing that I typically find lacking is the midbass.

You have a '91, that means that you get the 6.5" speakers up front, and not the 4" ones.

In ther rear, the main speakers back there are 4.5" This is an odd size, and one that you're not likely to find just anywhere. The other speakers, by the back seats are listed as "sub speakers" by Toyota, and they're 3.5" "sub" un this case should not be read as short for subwoofer, but for subordinate. It's sort of a mid/tweet setup.

Standard 3.5" speakers will fit there (I checked with a pair of 3.5" speakers that were in a Mk2 dashboard) but why you'd want to bother is beyond me.

A 5.25" speaker will fit with some modification in the rear speaker area. That's probably your best choice, and ignore the sub-speaker location entirely.

A separate amplifier really smartens up the system a lot. Despite the numbers that the deck manufacturers claim, they seem to limit to about 18W per channel, but it's really more like 9-10W before it starts to sound awful. They rate the amplifiers at what I deem to be an unreasonable level of distortion. A good amplifier, even moderately powered makes a huge difference.
