How many BTU's does a trans cooler need to expel at different HP levels? Some are rated at vehicle weight, which also makes sense.

Say 300 hp, 400 hp or 500 hp?

Don't quote me but doesn't ATF have to be between 180 - 220 Degrees to be optimal?

My IPT built A340E performs best with ATF temps at the lower ends of that range...180 deg F. Up shift into overdrive and converter lock-up (< 37 MPH) is inhibited when coolant temps are under 140 deg F.

Vehicle load is what produces heat for an auto tranny...my cooler is a Long's TruCool rated at 24,500 GVW (8"x11"x1 1/2"). IPT recommended this cooler, but any stacked plate cooler in this size range should be adequate. B&M makes one with an attached fan switched at 160 degs...excellent choice if you have to position the cooler in a location without direct air flow.

If I turn in the converter for one with a higher stall, it will heat up more. 24,500 is a pretty big size. And after getting the stacked oil cooler from B&M, I will be doing the same on the trans cooler. If IPT says that is needed, then that is good enough for me.

Good info.
