Well I blew out my 4" speakers yesterday that i installed not more than a week ago, so I decided to pick up a good set of 5.25" speakers and jam them into the door of my 86.5 supra.

Just simply took the high speed grinder to town on the stock speaker boxes until the speakers fit in the hole.

There was a slight gap (about .25") between the speaker and the factory boxes due to these 5.25s having much more depth than the 4" so i just filled the gap with some insulation from my attic lol

I think a worthwhile improvement over stock 4 inchers

Looks kind of like a half-assed job, but it does look almost perfect in location with the panel on, Nice man! Any telling if 6" speakers would fit?

Not a chance, 5.25 are the largest that will fit in the 4" boxes. You are better off making custom pods or getting post 90 pods for 6" speakers.

KevinM was and I still think its on, I wasn't sure if they would fit behind the 89 door panels which only have the 4" speakers and a tweeter.

yes, 6.5" speaker pods fit any year..

I have OEM 91/92 speaker pods in my 89 (but also the door panel and speaker cover) with 6.5's and they make a HUGE difference. Lots more bass...

Yeah if I remember right, the fitment is off by quite a bit where the 89 speaker hole is on the door panel, that led me away from buying it at that time. I still do plan on getting them, maybe with the 91/92 door panels, I was also looking into retro-specs rear speaker mounts, they are pretty nice. That was originally my idea of where to put my speakers, but they wouldn't fit unless you made a custom mount and I never had the time or supplies.

The 5.25 speakers that i installed were pretty big compared to other ones i looked at, I had to grind that grid-like structure flush inside the box to make them fit. And yes they clear the window since they are contained within the stock box still. I'll post the measurements if i can find the box.
