Yes, there is a spacer that goes under the nut. Same thing happened to me, couldn't get the nut off. Had to find a way to hold the chrome shaft thru the spring and high up enough so that spot wouldn't enter the shock when fully compressed and slowly remove the nut. Must be the correct spacer...
It might be a bad brake light switch... mine stayed on, even with car switched off. Had to re-adjust it all the way to pedal, can't see how it was out of adj, as it was still very tight. I think a new one is in the works for me.
