Here's a new one for me. out of nowhere the alternator guage is off the scale on the high side...it's
reading over 18 volts? wtf? It drops when I turn on somethng like the AC...or when I am at a stop light idling...but still way closere to 18 v than 12...
Battery? Voltage regulator?
I can't remember...when doing the retorque do you start in the middle (#1 in the manual) and work out to #14? Or do you start at #14 and work in to #1...?
As I have -posted, my cylinder head is a bit on the thin side having been surfaced at least three times.
I checked the valve to piston clearance and there was plenty of room, so I bought a new Toy gasket and put everything back together.
Runs great. Idles nicely. Plenty of power...
After doing a HG repair, there is an extremely large amount of oil gushing out of the camshaft seal on the exhaust side...
I have seen seals leak, but never anything like this...naturally I am going to replace the seal...even though it looks OK...question is what the H would cause so much oil...
88 supra non turbo.

Assuming, of course, that the block height...
Here's a cut to the chase.
1988 N.A.
HG was blown. Head had been machined twice before. Third time left it too thin to be in spec. Installed a steel head gasket shim sealed on the block side with copper spray. Used a genuine Toy HG.
Torqued the new headbolts down to 75 lbs in four steps...
What? Doing a compression check with my trusty Sears compression tester and I am now getting a reading of 240 lbs/sq.in. on number 6 cylinder...isn't that just not possible? Should be closer to 156...
Is the tester just not working? Has to be...engine runs good...no missing...good power...
It's a 1988 NA 5 speed.
I replaced the head gasket the first time in 1999. Did the full head job.
It lasted 9 years.
I replaced the head gasket again about 19 months ago- using the felpro
head gasket. Got the full head job again from Dover.
A few days ago I noticed a lot of whitish...
