i just push on the bucket with a flat head screwdriver and suck the shim out with a magnet.this is the tool i used to pull the retainer and keeper's.it's magnetic and all you do is puch down on the spring.

it come's with another piece for installing them too

i also used a spark plug boot tool to pull the valve seals out

tsuper92 has the BEST tool for removal and installation.

when you buy the tool (any matco/snapon should have it...even auto parts store should...as i think i bought mines at sears) it'll come with instructions.

as you guys can see in his pics, one end you put on top of the retainer, give it a good wack, the retainers pop out and the magnet catches the retainer.

when you install it just put the retainer back on top neatly...use the other part of the tool and give it a nice hard push and it should nicely seat on the valve.

to install the valve seals, i found out from a master tech that using a 12point 1/4" 10mm deep socket fits PERFECTLY over pretty much all toyota valve seals. remember to give it a sleight lube when installing.

    simple as that.

i have that same tool tsupra, however mine was bulepoint or something sanpon's cheap line or some garbage? cost me 70 bucks, but man does it save time...

I still find it easier to do the hammer and socket to pull the keepers out.. one bang and both fly out and you juse use a mag to pick em up from inside the socket.

if your head was just reshimed, would you have to reshim it again if you install cams?

yes you do! every cam is sleightly different. there is none that is EXACTLY the same.

by the way i'm jealous of your cressida with that sickass turbo. i'd love to have one of those but too pricey.

this thread would be great also if everyone gave shim numbers they arent using so it might benefit other people.

dude, go big! you wont regret it. i have 272 small cores and stock springs/retainers...doing just fine. pulls HARD all the way till redline. i only lost 3-5 mpg.

    2jzs will work.

honestly when i worked for toyota everyone had a bucket of shims and we would always just mix and matched..from camrys, supras, 4runner, etc... but a few people here have said that only 2jz and mr2 shims work so i'll stick with that statement if i were you.

What is the estimated time to install the cams? Just curious since I'll be doing it soon with 2J cams.
