What are my options?

I'm looking to upgrade my front speakers on my 89. The previous owner installed 6.5" mounts and some 6.5" speakers that aren't that good (old Pioneer Carrozzeria.) He also installed a head unit from a newer Toyota with MP3 and WMA support. I was looking to install some 6.5" Infinity Reference speakers(http://www.crutchfield.com/p_1086022I/Infinity-Reference-6022i.html?tp=105&avf=N). Would those be a good upgrade from my current speakers? I would just like a little more bass(clean bass), my current ones vibrate and don't sound clean.

I would also go with a head unit that fits or modify the bezel accordingly.

The head unit fits fine. I have access to all the controls. I don't really want to deal with the hassle of mounting the tweeters for component speakers, so I think coaxial would be my best bet.

Ok, I just found out that I have 89 door panels and 91 speaker pods. Would the Infinity Reference be OK?

My blue Supra has Infinity Reference speakers (4" front / 5.25" rear).
The clarity is superb. There's not a lot of bass, but that's generally not a focus for a smaller speaker.
If you're running a 6.5" up front, you'll certainly get some clean bass, along with the well-known highs you get from Infinity speakers.

My silver Supra is running Infinity Kappa's. (same... 4" front /5.25" rear)
In comparison to Reference vs Kappa...They both have amazing clarity,
although the Kappa's seem to be a bit more powerful with a bit more bass.

IMO, You'll be more than happy with 6.5" Reference's up front.
-Especially compared to what's in there.

If you want more bass, you probably should go with a sub. Crutchfield has a good selection of powered subs, that don't take up a lot of space.

Depends on the sub you get. If you get an 'amplified' sub (like most of the bazooka tube line) then the amp is built in.

Even running your main 6.5" speakers on an amp will sound better than the head unit 99.9% of the time though. (will depend on speaker setup and which headunit vs which amp...)

I'm assuming you mean the amp. Yes, as long as it's not too tall it would be possible under the passenger seat.
