I just bought a 1988 supra turbo for 900 bucks knowing it had an engine problem. It was leaking oil and had a small knock but otherwise it sounded good. The engine was apparantly rebuilt some time ago, but when I did some inspections, I found the retainer ring for the oil pump driveshaft was broken. Of course that is where the oil leak was. From what I've read so far, this doesn't seem to be a common problem. The shaft goes in and out of the engine about 3/4 inch although it didn't go in that much when the pulley was on it. The rear timing belt housing has damage where the pulley was rubbing but the housing is still ok to re use. I read from a search that if the shaft goes inside the engine it can contact one of the rods. Should I completely tear this engine down or just fix the shaft and hope for the best. I am new to MKIII's and would appreciate some opinions.

I'd pull it and rebuild it. Especially if it has a "small knock". There are lots of tips on here for rebuilds. At least if you do it right, it's one less thing to worry about. At a $900 purchase price, you'd still be doing well imho. Some pics would be good! gl.
Depends on your plans for the car...if you're going to rebuild it anyway, might be time to do it. The shaft would have to break to contact a set of stock rods.
Otherwise, I'd pull the shaft and inspect the bearing and pump drive gear. If they look good, replace the collar/seal and call it a day. Take a very good look at the belt gear...these have been known to self destruct. Make sure you have good pressure (per the TSRM) if you go this route.

Thanks for the tips. I think I am just going to fix the shaft. I think that is what's causing the knock.

That ring broke on my shaft. I *think* it's what caused my rod knock but it could have broken during the engine teardown or something....
