The goal of this build is a reliable and streetable ride that will put down close to 400 whp for now. With being delayed for 3 months on parts it put everything way behind schedual, and I really started to miss driving the supra so Ive been trying to avoid any major downtime for the rest of this year. I have much bigger plans over the winter while shes off the road.
This is the most up to date progress so far, theres tons of pictures along this thread which are self explanitory.

Still Awaiting
I have my bigger spearco rep and hard pipes to install sitting here, just need a few days off to do a nice clean install. Still trying to locate a 57 trim ct and a SAFC II or Neo to reach my current goal.
Not my choice in interior color but pretty clean otherwise.
Looks like you've got your hands full with this one :)
Looks like it'll be a fun and beautiful ride when all said and done too.
G'luck.
How many miles?
Given any consideration to an aftermarket set of wheels?

The color isnt my favorite either, it does grow on you i guess haha. She has about 120,000 miles on the chassis and I picked up a set of 17" core racing 5 spoke rims not too long ago. just need to get some different size rubber for them.

Clean Supra! I agree with the color of the interior but I wasn't fond of the blue in my MR2 but it grew on me too. To each their own :)
Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the comments guys :biglaugh:
I made some more progress yesterday, im just uploading new pics right now. Going to continue on today prepping for paint of the battery area. Also going to repaint all the cleaned brackets, maybe even pull the dash today if I'm feeling up to it. Need to change a heatercore :3d_frown:.
Im going to try and get all the "not so fun" stuff done while the engine is at the machine shop. If everything goes as planned I will have the engine back for the easter weekend :evil2:

Wrapped up any wiring that could not be removed from the car, pulled any vac lines. Pretty much everything was covered, wrapped or plugged that I didnt want to get water into.

The solvent cleaning area, very handy in removing baked on grease. After solvent wash everything air dryed then brake cleened. Works slick.

Update
Began cleaning up the battery tray area, and prepping for paint.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01895.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01896.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01898.jpg
This is what the rusted areas looked like after 2 hours of painting on the rust mort.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01899.jpg
Did some more cleaning of parts and partially preped them to be painted. Need a good color scheme to do tho...
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01900.jpg
Anyone have some good color scheme ideas? I was thinking black with some dark blue accenting of some pieces. Im open to sugestions.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01906.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01907.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01909.jpg
I felt ambitious today after doing cleaning and prep so I decided I would pull the dash to change the popped heat core. The new core is supposed to be in tommorow, which im hoping it is so I can reassemble it tommorow also.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01912.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01916.jpg
Yummm can you tell it was leaking?? Gotta love the nasty lookin rusty stuff inside the core. Im guessing thats what years of sitting and not being run can do to radiators..
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC01917.jpg
And last but not least, I decided to remove the engine harness to give it a "re-build" haha. I was already there since I had the dash out, so why not. Going to throw on some new loom and fix up a broken connector. When even looking at the old loom wrong it turned to dust.

I made some more progress last weekend and this week. Heater core is now replaced and ready to rock and roll. :biglaugh:

Heres some pics of the ports in stock form. I had troubles taking pictures of the exhaust side (camera wasnt cooperating)
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/portingsetup.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/portingsetup2.jpg
These are the porting tools I used to do work. At my work we use these to do porting work on 2-stroke sleds, works out nicely when my wicked boss lets me work on my own stuff after hours :biglaugh:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/Intakeports4outof6.jpg
How much I got done after 2.5 hours.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/intakeportsdone.jpg
and a little over 3 hours and the intake side port job is done!
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/exhaustport2done.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/exhaustportdone.jpg
The almost finised exhaust side. Notice the knife edged area where the 2 ports meet.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/finishedintakeport3.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/finishedintakeport.jpg
Intake side all cut and texturized with 60 grit emery roll.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/finished.jpg
Done for the day.. A little over 5 hours spent on this and my eyes were startin to feel all buggy lol. Basically what my goal was on this port job was to make the head more free flowing but still retain as much of the stock port overall width as I could. Intake side was made slightly larger and made MUCH more free flowing (comparing to stock) then retextured with 60 grit paper roll. On the exhaust, where the 2 ports meet was knife edged and was smoothed out around the guide. I took as little as possible off so not too weaken the guide. Then was polished as smooth as my patience would allow.

thanks man :icon_bigg
My next step on the head is to radius the sharp edges on the exhaust ports then do some more clean up around the vavle seat area. Im probly going to end up replaceing all the exhaust vavles and recutting the seats. I had the head pressure tested and it passed but I dont believe it would last much longer before I burnt a vavle..

I was getting some what ancy after seeing all the summer cars coming out sportin theyr rims so I just had to see what the ones I purchased for the soup looked like while on the car.. They deff need shorter rubber, tires on rims are 235/55/17. Im thinkin I just might run the 55 tread on the rear and go with either 45 or 50's on the front. The raked out look is appealing to me :biglaugh:
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC02027.jpg
The battery tray area is now rust free! Looks hella better now, glad thats over with. Good thing I have a great father (who can paint very well) that doesnt mind helpin me out with body work.
$180 worth of color matched paint, hardener, and reducer for basecoat/clearcoat.

Continuing on with the cylinder head porting, I finished off the exhaust ports (did some more cleaning and radiused some sharp corners) Also did some combustion chamber work. Radiused the sharp squish area on the port sides of the chambers and removed the factory valve shrouding.
With doing this modification more of the valve will be used during intake and exhaust. Take note of how much more the vavles are exposed. I believe about 1 third more of each vavle is now being used.
I am lowering the compression ratio, but will be running an HKS 1.2mm MHG (which is thinner then stock) so hopefully I will retain close to stock c.r.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/1.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/2.jpg
In the first 2 pictures I very carefully handled the MHG and placed it on the cylinder head to mark out where the new gasket will sit around the cylinder. Gives me a basic guide line to where my limits are to cut out material.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/3.jpg
This time around I used more basic tools, just air powered angle drive with 3 different carbid cutting heads. a medium and small rose bud and 1 medium straight cut. You could get away with just using the small rose bud (just takes more time to remove material)
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/4.jpg
Picture of the stock combustion chamber
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/5.jpg
Starting to remove material on the first cylinder.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/6.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/7.jpg
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/8.jpg
These last three pictures are fairly self explanitory.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/9.jpg
This is the finished product after about 2.5 hours of work. Takes much less time to do this mod comparing to port work. All the valves where put into the head and I took a emery roll and texturize and smooth the chambers. Id give this mod a 4 out of 10 on the difficulty level. But GREAT CARE must be taken with enlarging the chamber, you do not want to go past the gasket area! Otherwise you will have a very large paper weight. I gave myself plenty of space not to cut too close to the gasket. (want to be safe here) If knock occurs the gasket wont be exposed as much, could prevent a BHG.

Nice clean car man. Looks like mine. I have maroon interior too with silver exterior and that maroon pin stripe. Mine is a non turbo. I also have a huge stack of maintence/warranty papers about 5 inches tall as well. I bought my car for 400. Not running. It needed a full tune up and main and rod bearings. I got it done and it runs like a new car. Mine is as clean as yours =p nice find though man and good luck.

Well I figured since I havent posted anything for some time now ill throw up some pics of that latest stuff I did.
Been stuck for a damn long time now! friggin crank and rod bearings. They should be on their way too me within this week. BIGGGG thanks to Mark from Vancouver, Wash. for finding me the last 4 bearings I need.
Hoping to assemble the 7m within the next two weeks. As SOON as those bearings are here Im goin hard for a week straight to getter on the road!!
Some of the work --->
Partly rebuilt the existing engine wire harness with new loom and cleaned all the wiring/plugs of grim. Looks pretty damn good only costing me $21.00 total to purchase 1", 1/2" and 3/8th's wire loom. Plus some quality electrical tape. Took about an hour to do, taking extra care (you know measure twice and cut once?)

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC02131.jpg
This is what the final look of the valve cover is. I think it looks pretty sharp adding a very slight bit of shine too them on the raised parts instead of going completely black.

Did a bunch more work today in the mean time while im waiting for bearings to show up. They were shipped out today so Im hoping they will be here within the next 2 weeks at the most.
Ported up the exhaust manifold to turo flange, smoothed out any sharp turn radius' and rough spots that I could reach with the cutter. Medium polish on the surface of the exhaust mani.

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC02167.jpg
Polished up the intake a little bit, got a little shine out of it but its not too blingin'

http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC02171.jpg
Recieved the clutch from driftmotion. Stage 3 clutch from action with upgraded 3200lbs pressure plate and 6 puck sprung disk. Havent seen anyone on SM who runs one. I will deffinetly see what this baby can do and test it to its limit.
http://i19.photobucket.com/albums/b157/suzuki_mx499/DSC02164.jpg
Started a few other things I didnt take pictures of yet such as removal and repainting of minor surface rust on the bottom lip of the rear quarters before they actually get bad. The best part yet is putting night shade on my tails, really curious on how this they will turn out. :)

Really it was on wrong :sarcasm: could explain why I had to use a hammer and JB weld to get that fan on ;)
Made some more progress tonight. :)
Hooked up all the wiring throughout the engine bay and inside the passenger compartment, installed alti, oil cooler lines, rad, pullies, belts and so on.
Took a couple attempts to get her started due to the CPS being 180 degrees out, doh! but all is well and got her going tonight. Big thanks to timmy again for all the help! Was glad didnt run into any leaks or big problems today.
Just need to install shifter, torque down driveshaft, put passenger side dash back together, put a timing light on her and a couple other little things. This will do tommorow once again after work. Got her all tuned up tonight :)
No more codes since the timing has been set, runs excellent and motor sounds very very tight. I am pleased with how everything has turned out. I now know the supra much better and feel far more confident in working on it.
Took her for a test drive around the neiborhood and everything seems to be good and in working order. Thinking now I had lots of the car apart, from the engine to almost the whole interior. Most deff a great feeling to restore something thats going to be mine for a long time :)

Nice car, we have twins:biglaugh: except I have a grey interior:naughty:
What are you running for exhaust? Do you have any plans for dyno/dragging the car?

Nice you lucky bastard, the dream is to find a shadow grey interior and swap it in. ;)
Right now im running a BIC 3" ddp to the stock exhaust, im waiting on my borla muffler to arrive so I can build the SS downpipe back. Have flanges, resonator and 13 feet of 3" stainless pipe but no muffler/tip :(
Going to dyno it once the engine is broken in, have maybe 100 miles on it now so a fair bit longer till then. Maybe in stock form but a must after the 60-1 is bolted on with supporting mods and stinger.
Drag racing is in order, making my own custom traction arms, purchasing 1 piece aluminum driveshaft and MT drag radials. Still have a long ways to go on the build but it will get there soon enough :)

Started building the 3" stainless downpipe back exhaust. No cats, and a resonator so far.

Its just like Christmas every week :)
Just need a little time to do the install, hoping for coilovers, wideband, aeromotive frp, 550's, and lex afm sometime in the next week. Hopefully us okanagan people get another day that is actually barable to work in.
Got up to almost 104 degrees in the shade today :aigo: Car doesnt like this heat either..

It was a nice cool day today since all the crazy forest fires smoke, played the role of clouds, soo in went the coilovers. Was a little bit of a pain to install the rears since I had to disassemble all the interior in the trunk area to remove the TEMS motors and do modification the the rear, lower mount to make them fit. The most difficult part was trying the get the ride height adjustment just right.
For being a coilover they ride suprisingly well and handle like a dream compared to the stock suspension. Just need better brakes and a track day then they will really show.

This is the "for now" setting till the springs pack down, then the final ride height will be adjusted.

Aeromotive AFPR, J-tube delete, Lex AFM, and 550 injectors installed. Hard pipes, HKS SQV and bigger spearco rep waiting to be installed when a have a couple frees days and access to the shop.
All thats left for my goals this year is a 57 trim ct and a SAFC II or Neo, she has come along ways in the last 6 months when I started this build back in March. Very pleased so far with the power its making already. Cant wait to put down even more power with the last 3 mods of the year.
