knock sensors dont cause noise.
either make a video, or show it to someone OTHER THAN the dumbass who suggested the knock sensors to you.
you may just need a valve adjustment. but its impossible to diagnose over the internet.

Alternator could be working a bit hard and making some noise if the battery wasnt fully charged, you would have to get a video of the noise though.

LOL'd at this :)
Get a vid up.
do you hear it only inside the cabin, or when you're standing over the engine?
I have a ticking sound inside the cabin but it's sort of quiet. Can't hear it when I'm over the engine. I was told (by a mechanic) that it was my speedo cable, but I'm not sure on that one.

there just might be thousands of things that can cause ticking noises in a car.
from the fuel injectors, to the transmission, to electrical components, power steering, water pump, alternator, and yes...all of our biggest fears: rod and crank bearings, wrist pins, and not so seriously, valve shims.
unless youve heard several different cases of rod knock before, chances are you will need to rule out a number of possible causes for whatever noise you are hearing.
if you post a video it can help, but in this case an experienced mechanic is the only one who can help diagnose your problem.
finding one is tricky, but all the experience you need is to hear your motor get rod knock for the first time and if you pay attention, that sound will never leave your mind for as long as you live.
long story short, maybe you should just run it out of oil and see if the sound changes! :)
just kidding but yeah get up a video and someone might hear something familiar, i know i can hear a rod knock in the very beginning stages, but that is depending on how i modulate the throttle, something i couldnt explain well enough for you to do in a video.

I knew the sound of rod knock when i got my first supra, because i bought it with a spun bearing. LOLZ, just drive/ run the car and see if the sound goes away. For most cars that have set up , the oil settles at the bottom. Most of the time when i let one sit up, i disconnect the ignition coil from the distributor and turn the car over a few times to prime it. But, different strokes for different folks ;]

^ pull the IGN fuse at the driver kick panel (7.5 maroon fuse) and the car wont start either... at least you get to stay in the car!

You say car was stored for the winter and noticed it ticking when you started it.. Possible cause is engine has been sitting for awhile so oil would have to travel around to lubricate bearings etc. Ive just started my 7MGE which has been sitting for 5 months after 15 mins she was sweet and quiet!!

start off simple, check the obvious. Do you have enough oil in your motor? Does the tick knock seem to speed up or get louder as you rev the engine? You might try draining the oil and running some slightly thicker synthetic through your engine. what would be even better is if you did that and also removed your valve covers and poured oil directly on the cams to try and lubricate the top end of the motor if there was a noisy/stuck lifter.
