check your valve clearances.

.008 for intake and .010 for exhaust Chuck.

thanks . whats wierd is it only lasts for 3or 4 seconds . i figured if it was a clearance problem it would rattle all the time. but when i crank it the idle shoots up to 2k then 1.5 then slowly falls to around 1k . do you think its jumping to quickly in rpm for the oil to get to the head?

Are you SURE it's the valves? Sounds like bottom end to me. If your bearing clearances are out of spec, your rods will rattle around on the crank until pressure builds.

I had a similar thing on an old motor. Then put the head on another motor it was still there.
I've had a friend who's exhaust cam seized in the head. Maybe oil passages are clogged? I'll bet accusump would stop it. Still doesn't fix the problem haha.

Ive had the valve covers off and its clean as a whistle, no clogs i could see.oil pressure is good .belive me i know what rod knock sounds like ive been through 1 rebuild and 1 jdm 7m motor that had a rod knock. i guess ill check the clearances on the shims when i get time. thanks for the ideas guys .

Chuck, it shouldn't take you but about fifteen minutes to take the covers off and check the clearances. I just did mine, so it wasn't that bad.

thanks ive had them off to swap for polished covers . your right its easy.its just cold and rainy
What Oil filter are you using and does if have an antidrainback valve in it?

Its a wix oil filter its smaller than the stock its an rx7 filter . The reason is because i have a sandwich plate made for an rx7 to pick up for my oil pressure gauge. I have no idea if it does have a antidrainback valve .
Post the filter part number I'm sure JDub will know.

what does the valve do ? does it keep the oil in the passages and filter from returning to the pan?
Stops the Oil draining back ;)
Sounds like your engine is doing dry starts.

Nope. I used to get dry start with those things.

so what is the solution to this? changing the filter? has damage been done to his engine?
Yep get a filter with the valve, might have accelerated the wear a little but shouldn't have hurt it too badly.

mine does this too! :sarcasm: im changing the oil this weekend.
you know before last oil change i had a wix filter and never noticed any rattle at start up. now that its colder and i have another filter (i forgot what the brand is, its whatever my friends shop keeps on hand) i notice a rattle that goes away immediately after start up. it lasts for maybe one second then stops.
Could be it then ;)

Yeah, they give us a reason to have Senior Citizen discounts..............:biglaugh:
Chuck, have you changed your filter and has it stopped the rattling?

no im going to start buying my filter before i take it to get it changed. im to lazy to change my own oil ,really its just a pain disposing it after the change.

If it's a regular Puralator filter, it does but it's crap. PureOne filters are much better. Wix or NAPA Gold (it's a Wix) are my favorite due to internal valve design...both the bypass and anti-drainback are superior. And, yes, if the pump has to fill the filter 1st you will get temporary oil starvation condition...I'd be more worried about the bearings though. Poor flow from thick oil (> 10W-30) can make it worse on a stock system.
It doesn't pay to use a cheap filter ;)
Bit of a clue guys it's not valve rattle ;)
(it's the big end bearings)

Definately big end bearings rattling with no oil on inniatial startup, my car does this with a genuine toyota filter.
There is a big thread on supraforums about this noise for 3-4secs on cold startup
I am using 10w40 mobil1 semi-synthetic oil, 10w40 seems to be the norm over here
The only Toyota OEM filters worth using are the Denso JP version...the ones made in Thailand (what you get in the US) are crap.

There are much better oils available in the UK than Mobil 1 too...Castrol Edge comes to mind. One of the 30W multigrades world be better for a motor with no mods to the oil system.

Would you say that the poor toyota oil filters could be the reason for dry start ups on the 1jz?
Based on what I've seen inside the Thailand filters, it would not surprise me....I do not use them. I am not as familiar with the 1JZ, but the oil-to-coolant circuit may also have something to do with it too. It's position is pretty high on the engine vs the 7M...what I don't know is how oil is directed to the cooler and does it have a provision to restrict draining. On the 7M, the stock cooler circuit is pressure based...even if the cooler drains, the motor has to hit ~40 psi for oil to flow to the cooler. At that point, the bearings are getting plenty of oil.
