Doesn't idle but drives normal with a bad fuel filter. Does that make sense?

as long as it is getting gas it runs...but wont hold an idle..

If it's a bad fuel filter it would do the opposite, idle just fine, but when you start driving and need more fuel flow, it would choke out
Check for codes, check timing, check all vacuum hoses are installed and intact, and then report back.
Idle Air Control, maybe.
Dirty throttle body, maybe.
fuel filter plugged, it would idle ok(maybe), and run like crap. Car requires more gas to move than idle, right? A plugged up filter would let less gas through, so...
