ok on my 89 n/a. it sounds like the tapping is coming from the head? it tappes at ilde and when you rev it up it slows starts tapping faster. am thinking valve? if so how long could this last? while i have my extra head rebuild. or could this be a rod knock? could this be a seious problem? thanks

You can read my posts in this thread and within those posts, there are links to two different ways to do the valve clearance adjustment procedure.

when your cars at idle look down at your crank pully , i throught i had a valve tap on my 1st engine but later on i found out that the crank pullys keyway splitt n took out my crank n pully , soo when ur cars at idle check down there n see if ur pullys boucin around !

I had the same problem. I opened it up and checked all the valve clearances, they were all ok. I still had the knock so I thought it might be sticking valves, since I had to remove the head anyways to repair this I just decided to replace the head with one from Topline. Still had the knock and then BAM!!! I lost the #4 Con Rod. After opening the motor up I learned that the nuts on the con rod had backed themselves out completely. Drop the oil pan and check better to be safe than sorry.
