View Full Version : Supra flew between a telephone pole and a brick wall

Pictures on page 3, I know that's why you're here.

And through a tree and about five bushes. :aigo:

Engine was running afterwards perfectly fine, the intercooler and all the piping even survived. I stepped out without a scratch, wondering if I had really just flown off of the road. :dunno:

I was going around a pretty sharp and long bend at about 40 mph at night, and this was one of those roads where there are no street lamps or anything, and it was really narrow with no curb, just forest beside it and a few neighborhoods. I was going to blockbuster to get a movie to see with some friends and actually was firm that I wouldn't be the one driving to get it since I hate that road and hate driving in the dark, especially in the Supra where SUV headlights are right at eye level! But we drew straws and I ended up going. :dunce:

So of course as I'm going around the bend (turning left) my steering wheel suddenly jerks a bit and I feel the car move off towards the right and the front right wheel slips onto the grass, which was still wet from the rain the night before. At this point I'm still somewhat in control and I kind of think I might have been able to save the car if I weren't so concerned with keeping the rear tires on the pavement and just steered left more, but I tried to just let off the throttle and straighten the car back out. It did, but the right rear wheel went onto the grass and then I just lost all control. :icon_eek:

My glasses flew off at this point but my friend in the passenger seat says he saw us go sideways on 2 wheels between a telephone pole and a brick wall (neighborhood signs around here always seem to be brick... I've seen about 4 smashed recently by cars), scraping both the fenders and somehow not knocking off my side mirrors. Then we bounce up on a log sort of thing, ram down a small tree and some bushes, and come to a stop.

We both kind of sat there for a second and debated whether or not we had crashed, decided we were both still alive, and got out of the car. My left wheel was at a 90 degree angle to the body, half shattered, and my lower control arm was bent like crazy, my balljoints for the upper arm and sway bar came off, and my steering rack was bent. So the car wasn't moving. :icon_sad: I had heard glass shattering and assumed it was my windshield, but a quick glance (after my friend retrieved my glasses) told me that wasn't it. Side windows, nope. Quarter windows, nope. Rear glass, nope. Headlights? Nah....

So then I walked down the street a bit back to where we came off the road... and found a bunch of glass from what used to be (at least) one shattered beer bottle! Pieces of my sawblade were actually stuck into pieces of glass and pieces of glass were stuck in my sawblade chunks! I couldn't believe what happened and when I told the police they took pity (I think one of them laughed a bit off to the side), asked me how much I had to drink (I don't drink at all, once again I think they thought it was a pretty funny way to fly off the road) and didn't even give me a warning. I know 40 mph was probably too fast for that road, it was one of those 25 mph turn roads, but they know everyone goes faster than that there and the stupid bottle was very likely the cause of it all.

So yeah, after about 3 weeks of having my Supra finished and registered it's gone. :icon_sad: I've spent the past few days replaying it all in my head and thinking about ways I could have maybe saved it. I just couldn't straighten it after it jerked... a more experienced driver might not have run off the road. But what's done is done. I think I'm going to go take that BMW advanced driving course in spartanburg ASAP to learn how to save cars from spins and such.

I know this thread is useless without pictures but it's raining again outside and I kind of want to go take pictures of the crash site to put up along with the car. Never have I seen a car this beastly: knocking down a tree failed to make the bumper even cave in even a bit; it only has minor scratches! And it protected my friend and I very well, we both walked out without so much as a sore neck. I was pretty lucky I didn't hit the wall or pole too. Maybe this is the Supra's way of paying me back for enduring hell to bring it back to life. :icon_lol: I guess I'll chalk this one up to experience and move on. The entire drivetrain is still 100% perfect so all I need is a new shell. And more work...

P.S.
If anyone has a shell for sale near Charlotte, NC I'd be happy to take it off your hands by the way =)

that sucks man :( i can't emagine how it feels to have her finally running then die like that. i hope you get another shell and keep that engine etc going :) no point spending all that money and not keeping it hehe.

just my thoughts.

and as for people throwing beer bottles and rubbish on the road when will they learn it really annoys me driving down the street and seein smashed glass everywhere people just don't care.

Dude that sucks hard. I know you went through hell with te car getting it back together. If it needs some rear suspension stuff that can be bolted on I will help you out. I have a parts shell with mostly intact suspension.

It's strange, if it were just rear suspension damage I'd be quite happy but unfortunately it's the front. I was just about to put in a 3.73 LSD and wheel bearings in the back so if the rear suspension went out I wouldn't be too concerned as long as the frame was straight. Sadly, the frame is crooked to the point where my door won't close normally and the front suspension is beyond repair, the crossmember is even bent. Thanks for offering to help though!

im sorry to hear this... i took a bend too fast once in my honda accord... and because i hadnt been driving very long (and it was a STOCK accord) i ended up going up the side of a hill and rolling... not pretty.

but i really dont think that ONE beer bottle caused you to crash. i tend to slow down a lot at night, unless i can see NOBODY around, and its a straight road...

bro you'll be okay. i know that cold feeling being that i crashed my baby in january. just salvage what you can and buy another one. i have my old car for a autocross/street legal drag racer and a little drifting. it's actually more fun because before when it was nice i was so worried about this and that. now i just driving the wheels off it. it take the beating well too. here are some pics of my crash so you don't feel alone. just stay in the game.

Antenna was bent against the brick wall, shows the angle the car was at while going between the wall and the pole. I am damn lucky!

At least the part I put the most work and $ into is fine =) I may be able to transfer the interior but if I can get a nice one with the shell it will be for sale.

I'm selling off all the Supra stuff I have to get money for a new shell =\ If you see anything you like on the car just shoot me a PM.

What movie were you gonna see?

We have a quest to see all the Rambo movies (again, we're young enough that the ones we've seen before are faint memories) and we were on #2.

Can always rebuild a car... can't rebuild your body or your friend.

That's what I am very thankful for, it's amazing that neither of us were hurt. It helps that the drivetrain is fine too, the body itself only cost me $400 and it had tons of problems. Looking at it from a positive perspective, I can put this drivetrain into a better shell and fix a lot of problems by getting a proper body this time.

its the what-ifs that hurt the most (first wreck or two my mind was racing with 'what if i had done this', etc). dont worry bout what happened, glad you guys are alright and hell, this gives you an excuse to do a little more wrenching :)

Yeah, I think I tried too hard not to jerk the wheel back to the left. I've actually tried to practice avoiding cones and keeping myself from breaking the rear wheels loose in a parking lot before and found that it was better just to keep the wheel whatever way it was and let off the gas smoothly. Unfortunately this time it might have been better just to jerk it to the left, I was too close to the side of the road already. I have a feeling I would have lost traction but not crashed since I wasn't going very fast. The darkness/no street lamps didn't help in my judgement of how far away the edge of the pavement was either =(

No bumper brace?
That's the first thing I noticed too. That looks like a much more severe wreck than mine though, sorry to see it in such twisted shape =( I'm very glad I decided to go with a smaller IC and kept my bumper brace, it definately absorbed the bulk of the impact. I knew there was a plus to having a dinky little IC =)

hey man sorry to hear this.... my old supra got hit head on by a truck too... there are a few supras here in asheville thers one in the paper its an 87 turbo for 2700 and there are several more around for relatively cheap that i know of... one of my old ones is for sale for like 800 its an 86.5 na 5spd runs but needs a knock sensor rewire... has part of the trim shaved in and is primer... i have a few pics... the car is in decent shape though. you could always sell the engine and get most of what you paid for it back.. i would be willing to take you to where it is if you want i dont have the guys number anymore.. lmk try looking at iwanna.com theres a few around...good luck

I'm trying to get a turbo shell that has/matches wiring because of the nightmare I had with this shell, otherwise I'd take a look at the 86.5. The 87 is a bit high for me =\ I'll check out the website, thanks for the link and notices! After seeing these wrecks I expect the Supra wasn't as bad off as it should have been even after being hit by a truck =) They really are pretty strong, until you take out the bumper reinforcements of course.
