View Full Version : Upgraded turbos and gas mileage

Maybe it's just me... but did anyone else notice a significant increase in gas mileage after they upgraded from stock twins? :)

I regularly see about 30-50 extra miles per fill up compared to my stock twin setup.

It's just the way I drive the car now. Before, I used to be WOT everywhere 'cause full boost was there on tap at anytime. But not anymore. It's not bad, just different.

-1st gear is useless. Won't build full boost in 1st.

-2nd gear revs out for me around 70ish@7500RPM. On the street, I can't do that. 70 in a 45-50 zone is bad news.:biglaugh: 2nd gear is great for on ramps though.

-3rd revs out over 100, so that's bad too. :biglaugh:

-4th will have me doubling the speed limit with ease.

I find myself doing a lot more relaxed driving and cruising, which isn't a bad thing.

you still floor it everywhere though.. cause 1jz doesn't have any torque..

Not the stock twins joe, but my old black supra got a huge hwy increase of gas mileage after I went from ct26 upgrade to t66.

Yea, I noticed it too. It's because the stock twins spool earlier. Whenever you're in boost, fuel consumption is higher then when not in boost. So if you have a turbo setup that spools in higher rpm's, then you won't be using as much fuel when cruising around.

Under vacuum, the 1JZ is a fuel sipper. A 2.5 burns less gas than a 3.0 because less air in the chamber, less fuel required. Under boost, more air gets stuffed in and more fuel is needed. Duh. As Shadow said, if you build boost later, you'll use less gas. It's like comparing a GE to a GTE.

Ive been getting pretty good gas mileage but I think it could be better :) I need a tune!

Might as well be an on/ off switch.. Feeling like some boost? well flip it on and enjoy the 1JZ-GTE, then conveniently after youre done turn it off and enjoy your new found 1JZ-G(-T)E :)

My friends RB25 (big single) is like never under boost in his S13 unless were out on the freeway or he's pissed and he enjoys significantly increased mileage than the stock setup where power was pretty much anywhere you decided to just tap the gas a little (bye bye fuel all the time rather than here and there).

Upgrade FTW, just a better way of doing things. Wish I had money for a single..

This is why Supras get big ass singles. That way they can save gas until the sucker spools haha.

lol I was gonna say something close to that plus I never had stock twins, never heard of them :D

I noticed when going from stock ecu, to standalone, to GT40, to GT40 1.5JZ, my gas milage stayed the SAME where power roughly doubled. That was in the city. On the highway, I get about 30% better milage.

That was until recently. For some unknown reason, My car suddenly started getting about 30% increase in gas milage around the city too. I don't know what changed, but I like it.

i noticed my car got better MPG's after going to the 60-1 too. Stock twins spool too fast is what the problem is. i mean for the first few weeks i got WORSE gas mileage than on stock twins but thats just cause i was enjoy ing the single

its because your in vac more often since the single turbos dont build full boost at 2200rpms.

I'm still on stock twins and 90 percent of the time the car is on boost but still get decent gas mileage. Single or twins, if you don't floor it all the time you will get good gas mileage just my 2 cents.

Almost impossible to do though :D

One time when I drove to VA from NJ and I got 28mpg on the stock twins with the silencer in my muffler.

Very true :naughty: but look at this way ask yourself BOOST all the time or GAS MILEAGE ??? well, you take a pick. :sarcasm:

My supra is my "fun" car. So MPG isn't usually on my mind when I'm in boost. I DD an IS300 (which actually has worse MPG than the supra, but is very comfortable).

I'm curious what my MPG is going to go to when I put on a T04E 57trim.

When we were tunning my car, we spent almost 30min tunning the low. WOT took almost nothing. My gas mileage did get better then when I was with stock twins.

I come on boost very quick though, so to have some boost on every gear and getting good MPG is "F"in' awesome.

its because your in vac more often since the single turbos dont build full boost at 2200rpms.

I know that but what I was getting at more was because the powerband is so different, I have less chances to actually use full power and WOT. Almost never on the street and only sometimes on the highway. The mileage I'm getting now, I've done it before on stock twins but it was really a task to even try to do that.

I like the way the car is now. It's very tame until I really want it to be otherwise.

When do you start to build boost and make full boost jizake1jz?

My car is going thru a single conversion right now, but when I had the stock twins on, I would get 27 MPG on the highway. I would keep it at -10"Hg. It led for a boring ride but burned NO GAS. With the single on, I may not find out how good my gas mileage can be. I am going to let it go a little more (at first, atleast.)

There was never a 7M in the car to begin with ;)

When do you start to build boost and make full boost jizake1jz?

well i think part of the reason is that it runs a bit rich on the standalone. but as for the above question, its been a while since i've driven the car. the cool thing about it was that even before it made boost it was quick. i would half throttle it and keep it at 1 or 2 psi and the thing would pull awesome. i would say it made 14pounds somewhere around 3500 to 4000. it felt like it was in boost for a long time, put it that way.
