So the supra has pretty much been the car that I have wanted since I first began driving. Unfortunately like a lot of people, couldn't afford one, knew that, accepted the fact and just stuck with the hondas for a little while before moving to the dsm world. Well as luck would have it, my Dad has his dealer's liscense and used to attend auctions pretty frequently. Well it just so happened that my project popped up there one day and we brought it home for a whopping $1700!

So here we go. It is a 97 Targa top, NA automatic. So it definately wasn't my first choice, but in this case, I had no choice so I wasn't about to complain. I now had a supra, and couldn't be happier.

Now a lot of people would say, and they DID say, strip it of the good parts, sell them, and try to find me another one. Well that's not mine, nor my dad's mentality in situations like this. We take what we have and fix it. We would have never even got the car if we didn't feel confident in ourselves that we could fix it.

So here we go:

This is what the beauty looked like when we got it home
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/IMG_0592.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/IMG_0595.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/IMG_0613.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/IMG_0617.jpg

Everything on the front end is jacked, and some of the motor parts, but other than where the car spun around and hit something in the back, the car is nearly perfect. Me and my Dad checked all of the door lines, and stuff before we ever bought the car to make sure that none of them were pinched. And they weren't so this let us know that all of the damage was only done to the front as far as the frame goes.

Well, I absolutely couldn't stand the wheels that were on the car when we bought it, so I went ahead and went the cheap way out (trust me people, I am a broke a$$ college student) and bought a set of wheels from ebay. 18x8 and 18x10. They look pretty good if you ask me but they are pretty heavy. Oh well, I will trade some wieght for some better looks.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures001.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures002.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures004.jpg

Well I spent a few months looking all around online trying to find a complete front clip that way I could just buy it with everything I needed instead of trying to find the pieces one by one. Well that didn't work out and the 2 or so that I found were nowhere close to me. So I had to find something else. And something else I found after searching and talking to some people they recommended that I call a man by the name of Jim. Some of ya'll may know him. Owns Turbo Toys in Tampa. Much closer to home for me, and this is what he had for me.

Completely bare, gutted, stripped everything shell but the front half was good and it was all that I needed:
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures001-1.jpg

Thanks Jim!
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures002-1.jpg

Me and my Dad got it home, and didn't waste a second hoping on it since I was only home for the weekend.

Starting the endless process of drilling spot-welds and removing piece by piece.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures003-1.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures004-1.jpg

Now you see it!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures006.jpg

Now you don't!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures007.jpg

Sawzall powa!!!!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures008.jpg

On this side we didn't need as much of the front so we just picked a spot and sawed on through.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures009-1.jpg

And there she is!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures010-1.jpg

Ouch!!!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures011-1.jpg

Also snagged the only other good part from the shell which I just so happen to need.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures016-1.jpg

Pulled her into the basement for the winter so we could work more comfortably when it gets cold. My Dad's 94 tt FD behind mine. Pretty dirty

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Keylanspictures020-1.jpg

With the hood off, you get to see just how ugly that thing is. So I guess we call this a before shot.
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics001.jpg

Onto some carnage pics!! Bwahahaha

Waterpump and bracket snapped completely off! Block not hurt

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics003.jpg

Engine crossmember, snapped completely in half!!!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics002.jpg

What's a radiator support?

First shredded wiring harness.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics005.jpg

Second shredded wiring harness.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics006.jpg

And here she come's! Seriously the easiest motor I have ever removed. Less than an hour and a half. Course it was easier to get out without the front core support. lol

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics007.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics008.jpg

And there we go.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics009.jpg

A little better without everything in there

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics010.jpg

Frame where it got stretched so far outward that it broke in 2.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics011.jpg

At least my steering rack is still good! hahahaha

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics012.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Suprapics013.jpg

And while my dad starts the spot weld drilling on the car, I will be cleaning/polishing/painting this bad boy up.

took the suspension completely off of the passenger side so we could better see what we were doing.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures001.jpg

Then the cutting begins again. This isn't the final cut, it just got all the mess outta the way.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures003.jpg

And here's the junk piece that we removed.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures004.jpg

And here's what it looked like afterwards

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures005.jpg

Here we peeled the frame back so we could double re-inforce it from the inside when we put it back together that way we don't have to worry about anything.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures006.jpg

And I have been cleaning up the filthy engine. Here's what I got so far...

Bad driver's side frame rail.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures017.jpg

Almost there

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures018.jpg

And there we go. (this is where we needed our welder, so we just got it vice clamped to hold it up)

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures020.jpg
http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures021.jpg

Welded up the driver's side.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures127.jpg

Close up. We slid the new frame inside the old one. I would say the holes line up nicely!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures129.jpg

Amazing what a 99 cent can of degreaser and a tooth brush will do for a head. lol

Finally done with the S.O.B. Turned out ok.

Wow, another pansie ass'd MKIV.............:evil2:

I've seen this job in person and Keylan(thread starter) is my friday night co-pilot when I go out racing. He's the reason you guys didn't have any video of the kills I posted............:biglaugh:

In his garage he has more toys than Toys R Us. He has a 68 camaro, a 78 vette, two or three motorcycles, the Rx8, oh yeah and a bright yellow supra........That's more toys than any one person needs.

Those wheels he bought look really nice in person and look awesome with the yellow paint. I just hate that it's going to be so slow when he's done............:evil2:

Well I hope ya'll are as excited as I am because me and my dad actually knocked out ALOT saturday and a little sunday. I just got the pics uploaded tonight, so forgive me! haha. Anyways......

After getting the driver's side what we thought was correct we move onto the passenger side. The side that took ALL of the impact. Well since we couldn't use the firewall, or anything really, on that side to judge where the new parts needed to go, we had to go by the driver's side which wasn't damaged really in the wreck. So in order to do that we used the new engine crossmember that I bought and the bottom radiator support as guides. So I bolt on the new crossmember on the drivers side, and we go to test fit the new parts on the passenger side and low and behold it lines up like pure s**t!!! Me and my dad's hearts sink. There is at least a 2 in. gap between where the fenders mount and the firewall. No matter how we try to fit it or make it work, something else wouldn't line up. We were beginning to think that it was a lot worse than what we had orginally thought or even that the driver's side wasn't correct like we had thought. That was until I got to looking and noticed that we had bolted the new crossmember up backwards!!! hahahahaha. Turned that around and lo-and-behold everything lines up MUCH MUCH MUCH better and me and my dad could both breathe a sign of relief.

Here is what we ended up with in the test fitting stages. (notice my new crossmember! The one that was bolted backwards. lol)

To whom it was that asked earlier, I will definitely be staying with the yellow! It is a factory honda color by the name of Indy Yellow Pearl. Truly a beautiful color in person when it is clean.

Foreverpyscotic- My eventual power goals after the 6-speed conversion and turbocharging will be 500whp on pump daily driver if need be. But I would like to have more horsepower on tap for whenever I go the track and whatnot. A t-61 will get me the 500, but I don't like to be pushing the turbo too much, so I will most likely be going with a dbbT67. Should be pretty awesome.

Vonda- I know you would love to have the 2JZ, but I'm not sure how happy I would be to have the 7M. Hahaha. I have had plenty of rod knock in my first hondas to last me a while. hahaha.

Vonda's motor isn't fubar'd but it's pretty bad. It's a remanufactured motor and now it has six thousand miles on it and the number six rod bearings are royally fuc*ed! One half of the bearing is scarred and chipped and the other half is broken in half. I'm dropping the block off tomorrow to get the crank turned and new bearings installed. This will be the last dollar I ever spend on another 7m.

Thank you all once again for the props and motivation!!!

As Jay stated, I am now back to school which thankfully for me isn't toooooo far away (probably hour and 15 min.), so I personally am not able to make any more progress on the car during the week, but I will be back home practically every weekend and will do what I can while I am there. My dad however informs me that he is cleaning up the suspension and getting ready to put it back on the car and I will officially have a roller!! Woo hoo!! I cant wait!!

Unfortunately it won't stay on the ground, if it even goes on the ground, cause the motor will be getting prepped and ready to go back in. There will still be but one set back keeping me from starting the car though when the motor is back in and that is a wiring harness that I am gonna have to get new unless someone can find me one from a 97-98 car. This wiring harness is gonna cost $1000 and I don't quite have that much right now. Jay owes me some money, so that will help, but I am still pinching my pennies to get the last bit. But after that I could litterally bolt on my parts and drive! Of course it would still need a windshield, taillight, rear bumper, finish painting, and an inspection BUUUTTTTT it will be drivable. Hahaha. And as Jay puts it, "still slow". lol. One day Jay, one day!

No, not yet, but I have however officially bought all the parts needed. Matter of fact the rear bumper should be in this week if not already. (I am at school and I got it shipped to the house so I don't know.) And another buddy of mine was kind enough to donate me a set of taillights! And we already got the quarter panel from that other car. So all the parts are accounted for, but it will be after we get the car back on the ground and running though before we get to that probably. But it shouldn't take more than a day to fix. Maybe 2 depending on how much time we have.

the tunnels are different, well the top part of the tunnel.
there's write ups on Supraforums about doing the 6speed swap. I don't think you have to do it but it makes getting the tranny out when you do a clutch much easier. i think the part from toyota is around $150

Anyways, so I got to do a couple things that I have been wanting to finish up while I await my steering rack to get here. The first and least significant of the 2 was repainting my timing cover that was silver and came from a lexus. So I popped off the lexus emblem, masked off the letters, and painted it black. Looks much better now!! Here are some pics.

Here you can see where I taped off the letters and the glue still on it from the lexus emblem. Also what I used to mask the letters off. Pretty good huh?

Well the second, and most significant, thing that I did was my headlights. I was a little intimidated at first but once I started I was suprised at how easy it actually was. I don't have any pics of disassembly, but its pretty straigt forward. I just used a heat gun and heated up a section of the headlight where the 2 pieces come together. Let it get hot enough and just pry the 2 pieces apart with a screwdriver very carefully. I would work on 1 spot at a time until I got the whole thing done. I felt more comfortable with the heatgun than I did sticking the whole thing in the oven which is another way to heat up the glue. But here are pics during the sanding and painting process.

Started with this

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures067.jpg

Started sanding with "scotch brite"

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures068.jpg

Fully sanded

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures069.jpg

Painted using the same paint as the spark plug cover. Duplicolor high heat

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/KeylansPictures065.jpg

Before and after

Masking tape removed

Both done

Finished!!! (well I still gotta re-seal them, but thats it)

One of the moments you have all been waiting for...... (can I get some Rocky theme song music!) haha

Well I picked up my hood this weekend and when i got home I decided to throw the rest of the front end stuff on along with the hood. Well it turned out GREAT!!!! My parents were out of town this weekend and they didn't get back til this morning. Me and my dad adjusted all the front end and door lines after they got home though, but the current pics I have now are before we adjusted the lines cause I didn't know when they were getting home so I went ahead and took them. I will get more pics this weekend though of the new lines hopefully. All I can say is that they are so close to perfect you can't even tell. Shoot, I may even go far enough to call them perfect! haha.

Anyways, without further ado, here are the pics. PLEASE TAKE NOTE THAT I AM MISSING THE PART THAT HOLDS THE BUMPER UP IN BETWEEN THE HEADLIGHTS WHICH IS WHY IT HAS A GAP AND IS SAGGING! Also the bump stops for the hood were to high in these preliminary pics which makes it look worse than it is also.

I decided to get some more "whole body" shots since I haven't ever really had any. You can see my RMM wing also. This is the only whole body one I have uploaded right now though.

Looks great! I've always categorized the MKIV as a smiling car. It used to be the most happy car around until I saw the new 911 GT3s, those have a very obvious smile that beats the MKIV's. My car's also two colors right now and I'm doing some lining up of the front panels too =)

Ok guys, well it has been far too long since I have posted anything in this thread and I do believe I have some pretty sweet pics of the car on the ground and rolled out of the garage that ya'll haven't seen yet. Unfortunately we are still not done yet as me and my dad both have been busy doing other stuff on the weekends, which as you know is the only time we have right now to work on it. Thats all about to change though as I will be home for the summer after this coming Thursday and will have all the time I need to finish up. That is unless I start working with Jay again and he makes me work like a slave for him! hahaha. Just playing, but seriously Jay, if you need the help (cause I know I need the money), just holla at cha boy! :naughty:

Anyways, we got some parts to freshen up the engine and really all that I am missing now is a coil, which I will be ordering from someone on SF later this week. Once that gets in and we put the new water pump, timing belt, spark plugs, etc. on the engine, it will be ready to be dropped back in and maybe even fired up! I do have to replace a few plugs on the engine harness though before I do that. Thankfully I have all of them at the house on a couple other harnesses, I just gotta cut them off of one and splice them onto mine. Then hopefully no engine codes since it will have to be re-inspected and if it's throwing anything, it won't pass. But if there are any, I will just wire in some resistors for now! LOL.

We also got the rear quarter panel pulled out to pretty much where it needs to be and it just lacks some body work which won't take very long. I still gotta get the driver's side tail light, but other than that the rear bumper will be able to be put on and it should be ready for paint.

So, getting VERY close now! Shouldn't take long once I finish up with this year of school and go home to know it out!

TopNotch2JZ

This is directly copied from another forum, so if it sounds a little weird just ignore it! hahaha.

Well, as it turns out, I did get to do a little bit of work to the good ole supra today! NOT much, but I did reach a huge goal in all for the car. That was putting the car back on the ground and pulling it out of the garage for the first time since it's went in there. And that happened!!! I was soooo stoked!

We FINALLY put the steering rack in and bolted everything that had to do with it up. Once that was done, I was able to put the wheels back on and we pulled it out in the sunshine to put the windsheild in permanently.

Once the windshield was in, we put the hood back on and called it a day. The motor will be going in very soon now!! Enough of me rambling though, onto the pics.

Well got a little bit more done these past couple days. Finally getting to put some more paint down on the car!!! Not much YET mind you, but definitely some. We bought all of the rest of the paint we need to finish the car, so maybe next weekend we will get to paint the rest. I hope the color matches. We painted the back bumper, but I haven't put it on yet since we haven't 100% finished the body work on the rear quarter panel yet. It's 95% done though and looks amazing! My dad did a really really good job on it. Its in primer now, and that just needs sanded and we can spray it and put the rear bumper on to see how well it matches. Its gonna be really close if it doesn't match. We also painted the sides to my RMM spoiler and I already put it back on, but I need to roll it into the sunlight to see how good it matches. It looks really close in the basement though!!!

I will most likely be dropping my motor back in the car sometime this week!!! I ordered a coil and it should be in tuesday, and once I get the motor back in and the new coil plugged in, I should be able to fire it up! I can't wait!!!

I haven't gotten any recent pics of the quarter panel (DOH!), but I will get some tomorrow and show you how well it turned out. We decided to not cut that side of the car in half to put that other one on and just pulled it back out. Like I said, it turned out awesome IMO. But anyways, let me show ya'll some pics, cause after all, that's probably what you are here to see! LOL.

So that's what my car looks like wingless! (ewwww, mine just can't pull it off!)

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures190.jpg

What exactly was I doing with my wing you might ask? Painting it of course!!! But not just any paint scheme, I wanted to do something different with it. Mine is all carbon fiber and I wanted you to still be able to see that, so I didn't want ALL of the sides to be painted. Of course I would leave that little rectangle unpainted on the outside where you access the bolts for the middle part, but I wanted people to still be able to tell the side pieces themselves were carbon fiber too. So here's what I did. Getting my inspiration from the Mitsubishi Evo VIII carbon spoilers.

Dont worry, your not raining on my parade, I am just curious as to how you could come to that conclusion since I dont have pics of the 2 pieces at the exact same angle. Trust me, they are very close. I masked them and I am some what of a perfectionists. LOL.

Who knows though, they might be off a smidge, but i dont think you would be able to tell by the pics.

It's trick photography Razo. I know Keylan, and there's no way he made a mistake like that. It looks like he has one of them tilted causing it to look like that.

TopNotch2JZ
05-26-2008, 10:21 PM
Yeah, definitely just the angle of that shot. I can see how you made that mistake though. This is a better picture, but I cut off the bottom. But you can clearly see where it follows the curve as well.

Well got some more work done yesterday. We painted the driver's side quarter panel and the front fender, we also had to repaint the rear bumper cause as it turns out the color wasn't close to matching. We don't know what the color is currently but we did some tweaking with the paint with some existing colors that we had at the house. It was my suggestion to add some orange to the yellow paint that we have and it turned out pretty dang good. Much closer match than before, but still not perfect. The yellow that was on the car when we got it is super metallicy, where as the paint we have is also metallic, but not as metallic as what is on it now. But I can live with it, as long as it is one color is all that matters to me at this point! ;)

Here are some pics of what we got done. This first pic is just another one of the spolier outside of the garage.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures203.jpg

These are of the quarter panel work that I told ya'll I would get pictures of. Remember this is the quarter panel that was smashed in and we pulled out and my Dad did the body work to make it right again. Very nice!

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures208.jpg

Here it is compared to the other one:

Well when we painted the quarter panel the first time there was a couple spots that weren't covered in primer before the paint and the paint did not like it at all. So we had to sand them back down and re-primer them before painting it again.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures212.jpg

But once that was done, everything else went pretty good. We got the paint matching pretty good and actually made some forward progess with the paint. Enjoy! (BTW, there were some deep chips in the front of the drivers door that we filled in and primered, but haven't painted yet, so that's what that spot is)

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures213.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures217.jpg

NOTE: The rear bumper is only thrown on and mounted with 1 nut on each side, so that's why the lines look so off.

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures218.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures219.jpg

http://i102.photobucket.com/albums/m90/topnotchtsi/Supra%20Project/Keylanspictures222.jpg

And here is a close up comparison of the paint. Notice the difference in metallic. Oh well, the color is good at least!
