Starting problems and misc plugs

Well my friend has an auto 86.5 and he replaced the starter and it won't start. When you go to turn the key it just sounds like a relay is clicking right when you turn the key. The battery is at 12.5 volts. The starter has two conections, the one from the battery directly to the starter( bolt on), and the brown connector to it. I have found these plugs that aren't plugged in.

One is a four pin the other is a two pin.

The brown one looks like a VSV plug. the other looks familar but I just can place it. Were are they located? Intake side or exhaust side?
How did you check the voltage? While you were cranking it? Check your battery connections to make sure they are clean and check your grounds, they should be clean.

They on the intake mani side. The pic was taken right under the intake mani near the starter.

They on the intake mani side. The pic was taken right under the intake mani near the starter.Yeah the brown is a VSV then, there are a couple on that side. One goes to the VSV on top of the Vac canister under the manifold, and the other one if I remember right is a VSV to the EGR.

I really like that little white plug. If its the one I think it is, it confuses a lot of people.

Yeah, the little white connector just hangs out. Caused me about an hour of searching trying to find what wasnt plugged in when I first got my car.

I'm not trying to highjack this thread or anything, you mentioned those connectors are on the intake side? What is that deal in the pic that looks like an oil dipstick? My 86.5 is on the exhaust side.

I just realized, you said you have auto, it must the transfluid dip stick :)

So one more question. The one wire that plugs onto the starter is it supposed to have voltage while trying to start it?

The small single wiree should have battery voltage when in start position.

So the small wire that goes to the starter (not the huge connection to the battery) has a voltage it cause's the starter to start(similar to a relay)? There are no other connections to start the starter?

Just the larger battery (bolt on) and smaller solenoid (connector) wires. There may als be a ground at the bottom starter bolt. I usually see that bolted to the block transmission brace however.
