SOGI AFM mod: exactly where is said gear?

Hey everybody. I've read about the SOGI AFM mod, and it seems that hundreds of people reference it all the time. (It's here BTW: http://supras.com/04/resources/index.php?id=16&q=AFM) I've looked at my AFM, trying to locate the "black plastic cover." I've found something right on the top (very obviously) that would seem to be the cover, but it appears to be loosely glued in place with some sort of semi-transparent gel-like caulking sort of stuff. Is this the correct cover, or must I look elsewhere? If I do indeed pry this off, must I reseal it as it is now?

Sorry for the lame question, but I'd really rather not pull this thing off and not find what I'm looking for.

Do you have a turbo or non-turbo? The turbo AFM has no moving parts (ie gear) and the n/a has the gear.

If you're NA, yeah that's it. I wouldn't advise messin with it though. It makes diagnosing performance and idling issues that much harder cause sometimes it will skip a tooth or two once you move it.

For reference, I do indeed have an N/A. Currently my car idles like a dream, with no RPM fluctuations or any problems whatsoever, but if those arise, it's great to know what to set back to stock first. Has anyone done this "mod" before? Any positive, or negative?

read above, only minimal gains, but it made diagnosing issues I was having with idling that much harder when they did occur.

id listen to squid on this....the "gear" would be inside the black plastic electronics box...the "glue" you are talking about might be someones way of siliconing it shut or something...

if you happen to break your afm in this process...let me know as i have an extra one lying around ;)

heh, i have an extra one too. i did this mod on my N/A, and the gain was so minimal that i shouldnt have wasted my time on it... eventually, although probably unrelated to this mod, my AFM died, so i got a different one, which is now sitting in my garage...

I've got two at my place, one modded and one not. It got so bad when I was having my A/F problems the modded one would jump around on me - the thing was basically dead and that contributed to me not driving my supra for 5+ months when it was a really stupid and easy fix.......I'm turbo now so it's all good. Listen to our experience on this one.......IT'S NOT WORTH IT!

Hey, thanks everyone. It's nice to know that the effect of the mod is negligible, coming from people who know what they're doing. On top of that, Toyota's engineers set up the system to begin with, and I'm sure they have some pretty good reasons for setting up the car the way it is. That said, the Supra also has emissions control systems :p

Your comments have potentially saved me a lot of trouble, and hopefully anyone else considering this modification will be advised by this thread.

Well, I might actually need an AFM, depending on if mine is going bad or not. Currently, my car is getting pretty horrific gas milage, and it may be related to the AFM (I would think maybe, but I really have no idea). I drive my car reasonably hard, both in city and on the highway, but my average of something around 15MPG seems very low compared to the Turbo's 18/22 rating that I've heard. Now, this MAY not be insanely outrageous, because I do drive in excess of 100 reasonably regularly.

I've got a 1992 N/A with Auto transmission...is this highly irregular? Are the injectors dirty, or what else is possible? I've been thinking of starting a new thread about this, but it seems that it might be the AFM, which is under discussion here.

its highly unlikely that your afm would cause you that bad of gas mileage...you could have a clogged fuel filter, leaky injectors, bad o2(major one), etc etc... theres actually a thread talking about this kind of stuff :

i drive a 87 NA right now and picking up a 88 turbo targa tomorrow, but my na stock cept for a SAFC leaned out 4% across the board... i get 27mpg outta that car! its awesome
the safc has alot to do with that tho... i dont ping and the plugs are healthy looking so its not tooo lean

so the next thing you do is pull the afc out of the NA cause thats useless and put it in your turbo and mod that up and have some real fun ;)

i bought the safc while i was buying parts for a NA-T.

i did pick up the supra t! just need to mess with it, the past 2 nights i have worked l;ate and havnt got to touch it since it rolled off the trailor :'(
