bad starter? or wiring

I finally finished putting my car back together last night, and tried to crank it, but it doesn't do anything, the starter just spins but doesn't engage, I tried to knock it with a hammer a few times, but that doesn't seem to help. Could it be just a bad starter (it was fine before I took the motor apart) or bad wiring somewhere that messed it up?

ps. on another note, does a 2JZ-GE starter work on a 1JZ?

mine just clicks a few times then will crank the motor, i even changed the starter and even wired up a push button. but it still does it, im lost on what it is

Buy a digital multimeter for 10$ and then you should be able to tell if it is bad or not. Also it's not the engine that determines the starter it's the tranny. And since it's an r154 just tell the knucklehead working a autozone you need a starter for a 91 turbo mk3.

like I said on SF, the relay doesn't engage, it's not the wiring, else it wouldn't spin. Try a different starter or get this one fixed/refurbished

OT: rich, did you have the nearly same avatar before with it blue instead of red? for some reason I remember it being blue.....

the shaft in the starter is supposed go extend, so the teeth can meet up with the flywheel teeth, then spin, to move the flywheel. So if the shaft isnt extending, i would say %100 you need a new starter

Yes, with the rebuild I changed some cosmetics, this is what it used to be:

The camcover colour didn't turn out like I hoped and I also didn't like the blue stuff with the 6L9 green body and tan interiour, so I changed it to what it is now in my avatar.

i'm going to replace it with a 2JZ-GE starter when i have some free time, I finally got a job at a auto body shop =) so that means i'll finally have a paintjob too haha

yeah it's the starter, put in a new starter, that bad boy pops right out
