Since Theresa was working late tonight and I didn't bring any work home with me, I decided to take a rare break and fool around with the garage demon.
Dashboard customization! :D
Custom made 10,000 RPM tach, 220 MPH Speedometer, blue LED lighting, installed & complete. Looks pretty good with her APEXi EL series gauges and the Panasonic head unit. I changed the color of the odometer too, but it's still a little too "green" for me. I'll work on getting it more blue.
The results:

And yes that odometer says over 160,000 miles on a 12 year old car. I drive my Supras... ;)

Looks great except for the FM adapter for the iPod. :D Get that hardwired into that deck!
Awesome that you give the supras regular usage, they were made to be driven.
I love your garage arsenal.

Second the ? for the 220mph speedo, I have a feeling you haven't tested it that high but is it accurate?
Very cool all around, good to see that it's a garage demon that's driven.

i want more info on the specifics on those gauges... what can your car hit in terms of speed and RPM?
are those just for HOLY SHIT factor? i mean... 10k RPM.... uhhh

Wow. Your 95 has 20K more miles than my 86.5. Damn.
Looking good though. I would love to have blue gauges, I'm just to lazy to take the dash out AGAIN. I'd probably break something this time around...

My 87 has the exact same haha, I cant blame Mike, Id be doing the same thing, why own a damn car to let it sit there? Use it, drive it, have fun with it, you bought it for a purpose. :evil2:
In 1999 I did 75,000 KM's in the year :)
Supra's LOVE the open road.

Love the 220mph gauge, how accurate is it
I doubt it's very accurate. Besides, if I'm going fast enough to be in the "unexplored range" of the MKIV Speedo, I'm keeping my eyes on the road, not the gauges.
Looks good Mike, very clean. What font was used on the custom gauges?
I honestly don't remember Dirgle. I'll see if I can track it down. The gauge faces are actually stainless steel, but I didn't like them being reflective so they are powder coated black now.
are those just for HOLY SHIT factor? i mean... 10k RPM.... uhhh
Redline starts at 8,700 K, which is pretty much where I want it for a built 2JZ.
Supra's LOVE the open road.
Yes, they do. ;)
Mike: Don't find all the blue a bit bright of a night?
I've got them on a dimmer, you can dim LED's, you just have to vary the current. The range isn't as good as an incandescent, but it dims them down enough.
I'm not done with this project, I've got some other ideas I'm working on for that dash as well.

Oh and for those parts in the cluster that are a little less lighted you can actually cut some of the plastic on the back to free up light travel. JSYK

Only with the proper engine components. Stock redline is around 7 for 1J, can't remember for 2J
7200 1J, 6800 2J IIRC. Probably wrong on the 2J. I read someone revved a 1JZ up to 9500 before valve float. That's FTW

OMG that's fast. haha... so can valve float damage the engine?
Yes and No. On a non-interference engine like ours? Not likely. On an interference engine (such as a Mitsubishi 4G63) I've seen it happen.
Figit090
09-22-2007, 05:05 PM
makes sense. i was just curious to see if a misfire into the wrong passage or firing with an open valve would damage anything (other than direct piston-valve contact that is)
i want a 1jz...

Figit090

hmmpf? loose tons of power? over what?
is their bottom end really god-awful or what?
Poodles
09-22-2007, 05:58 PM
no, valve float kills power
low compression = crap power
at the point of valve float it will stop making power, so there is no reason to get up there in the RPM's unless it's fixed
Figit090
09-22-2007, 06:13 PM
oh yeah i probably wouldnt really get it up that high at all. I figure anything above 400hp is overkill for a college student =P
heck i'm happy with less than 200 I just want a bit more sometimes...and no fear of rod knock =P

That's what I tell my friends to do once their iPods break and it works everytime.

Speaking of 220mph speedo's...
Few years back, I was going to Vegas with 5 MK4's in a caravan from Boise.
We were in the middle of nowwhere, and crossing what used to be a dry lake, and it was the perfect place to do a high speed run.
SO, redline on the 7MGTE for my 88, in 5th gear, and I'm going about 173mph or so...
Get passed by a built MK4 who's going over 190mph... Talked to the owner later, and he had the redline at 9k, but was not that high when he passed me.. somewhere in the 7500-8000rpm range he said IIRC. His car had a T-88 on it, and was on pump gas, so low boost and mid 500rwhp he said too.
Long legs on the Supra is an understatement. They don't feel stressed at that speed, and that's what is really quite funny. When you slow down to a more sedate 120mph, and set the cruise control, it seems perfectly normal..

The thing that has ALWAYS amazed me is how stable they are. At those speeds they don't feel any different than they do at 120. Which feels no different than 80...

they just get a little louder from wind noise...
fastest I've ever been in my car was around 5500 in 5th gear with stock everything (stock tire size, rear end ratio of an 89, ect..) just got loud from the wind

MK4's are fun because of thier great highway performance. My cousin had one with just over 700 to the wheels and it went to 160 without any resistance it felt like, just bam you're there. Good looking guages supra central, one of the fem mk4 people I have seen that A. Works on thier own stuff, and B. Drives thier car a lot (most of the ones I see call them "investments" and garage them to death).
Nice mod man, keep it up.

do people re-gear for higher horsepower? I get annoyed that i have to be at 3k RPM to cruise at 65-70mph... i feel like I have the torque to do fine at 2k rpm going those speeds.... not passing but thats what downshifts are for...
So in my case, my car would basically sound like its going to explode if i passed 120 mph....lol.

Well. Very well.
Aside from a hell of a lot of wind noise, I have yet to find a speed that the MKIII felt unstable at. I took it up to 150mph a while back, but got scared, and let off. The car was rock solid the whole time though.
